Think warm thoughts.[cool] I will be dropping some cash for some saltwater tackle next month. Time to think about and get ready for my next trip to the coast even if it's 6 months away. I understand that happens at Causey? [signature] Re: [brookie] Just thinking about fishing for Kokanee - wiperhunter2 - 12-20-2015 You really can't, you just have to get lucky. The way I target kokanee threw the ice is to fish in locations where I've caught them before, then you just hope they come by. Some times they will, especially in smaller lakes but in bigger lakes like Strawberry and The Gorge, it is very tough and the odds are against you. In fact that is my most targeted fish. (Tasty little buggers) so throughout the years if ive picked up any advise to give on kokes its being at the right place at the right time particularly at small bodies of water like causey and porcupine. It takes time and a good fishfinder. Best i can figure is they run different parts of the day in different depths. Once i can pick up a pattern im usually successful. Causey for example a few years ago i had the time and place narrowed down pretty well and was only able to fish one rod because it was extremely fast. However the bite was only 30-45 mins long and it would flat out stop. Couldn't even hook a straggler. So my best advise is stay consistent in going to your location check different depths different times of day. Re: [albinotrout] Just thinking about fishing for Kokanee - brookie - 12-20-2015 Interesting video, a lot different than summer. Those jawjackers are all deadstick, so no movement. Also the bait was different, he said a small pink jig. I wondered where he found his jawjacker fairy to set up all those rigs, while the kid pulled them all in. [signature] Re: [Hardecker] Just thinking about fishing for Kokanee - brookie - 12-20-2015 Thanks Hardecker for your advice. I will probably need to start looking at Electric Lake as Causey and Porkupine are a bit too far for me to be consistent. Did you find deadsticking as in the video helpful or do you jig? Also what baits would you recommend? [signature] Re: [brookie] Just thinking about fishing for Kokanee - albinotrout - 12-20-2015 [quote brookie]Interesting video, a lot different than summer. To me the big schools of kokes circle the lake and when they are under you, you can really catch fish, however, they move past fairly quick and then I just wait for the next pass... it's a feast or famine type fishing... some days I limit, other days I only get a couple, but I prefer it to the slimers or the panfish through the ice.... They eat much better in the winter than they do in the summer... firmer meat and fun on light tackle... Not sure what to tell you on tackle, I catch them on everything from spoons to jigs and lots of colors... It's more a thing of getting on top of them and a fish finder is critical so you fish the right depth... If you don't have your lure in the middle of them, they won't seek it out, you need to be right on the numbers... Usually the feeding Kokes are from 30 to 40' down in 90 FOW on porcupine.... That's just an average from past years, but a good starting place... When your catching fish don't waste time getting back in the water, your window is small so pop the fish off and chuck the lure back in the hole.... Good luck, J [signature] Re: [SkunkedAgain] Just thinking about fishing for Kokanee - brookie - 12-21-2015 Wow, that is really helpful. Can't wait for ice on Electric Lake to try it - hopefully it will ice soon. I have a good idea where to start. Thanks [signature] Re: [brookie] Just thinking about fishing for Kokanee - SkunkedAgain - 12-21-2015 You bet and good luck. Later J [signature] |
