Has anyone ever caught a wiper through the ice? Just wondering, also, how about Kokanee?

Kokanee are my most targeted fish. They are tasty buggers. Never a wiper through the ice though. Id think a wiper would cause a lot of havoc with light tackle. Every wiper ive ever caught has fought like a champ.

I to have caught a Wiper through the ice. It was a few years back. Caught it on a jigging minnow. I can tell you it was a hoot.

A gas auger and fishfinder are key for tracking down kokes imo. Takes a whole bunch of holes to find them. But once you pattern them you can usually get on a pretty good streak. I might be wrong but my experience has been they run in schools certain places certain times of day.

I caught 2 Kok's at Strawberry last year. One on a green Ratfinkee and the other on a white Paddle Bug, both topped with a wax worm.

We fished for kokes a lot up in Idaho. Ill be honest they can be pretty frustrating but they are a hoot when you figure them out. We usually wouldn't move much. They are cruise in big schools so its usually easier to get in the right locations and let them come through or draw them in with jigging. Having some type of flasher of sonar is a must to get the depths right for them. Our go to tackle for them is Swedish pimples tipped with a meal worm. I prefer white and pearl and I know lots that use the same thing in pink. Take off the treble hook and switch it to a single setup. When the school comes through the name of the game is getting as many hooked, on the ice, and jig down to depth as quick as possible. They are light biters usually too.

If you want kokes through the ice, the narrows at the berry produce some fat fish in the winter. They are usually in about 80-100 ft of water about 30-40ft down. Agree with Hardecker that a fish finder is key to fishing for kokes. Once you get in their area, they will come in swarms and you want to catch as many as you can before the school leaves.

], I've caught a few threw the ice in my day but never on a big lake. Saw WiperMac pull two out while ice fishing the Gorge a few years back and ever once in a while a member will say they have caught them at the Berry while ice fishing but few folks seem to catch them at those big lakes and do it consistently.[signature]

We usually have pretty good success up at Causey for the Kokes. Swedish pimple with a ice fly and wax worm down from the pimple a foot to 18". Maybe i need to keep a hook on that pimple, never tried it.

Never caught a Wiper through the ice, but have caught a lot of Kokes. Haven't targeted them for quite a few years but we used to catch a lot of them out of Porcupine and I've pulled several from Strawberry through the ice. What everyone says about them swimming in schools is true so we would find the school and then drill holes to each side for about 50 yards so that we could follow them when they moved. We used silver castmasters as an attractor with ice flies tipped with wax or meal worms about 18 inches below that. Good luck.

A tipped pimple is what Ive caught 90% of them on and the other have come on a small jig with half a maggot on the jaw jacker. If on a jacker you have to set it up for a light hook set or you will pull the hook out unless you have a snubber on.
