Wiper Boils - HD7000 - 07-27-2016
So I heard a lot about the infamous wiper boils before I moved back to Utah 3 years ago. Since then, I have fished willard more than any other lake in the state and have yet to see an actual boil. Water is above 18' this year so I was really hoping to see some. Any word or guesses on when/if they are going to be a thing this year?

The boils start as the water starts to cool off. We are in the peak heat of summer so I wouldn't expect to see the boils to start until late August and rip roaring until September. They taper off in October. I think that it will be a good year for it with the water up. We are all waiting with baited breath.

[#0000FF]It takes at least two things to generate wiper boils. First it takes lots of baby shad growing beyond the 1 inch mark...to make them worth all the fuss. Second, it takes water high and clear enough to allow the sight feeding wipers to see their prey from a few feet away. In low murky water the wipers are limited to finding their prey by vibrations alone and that don't cut it for creating boils.
Water is up and staying much clearer than the last three years. I am betting that when the wind dies down a bit it will clear even more and it will be game on. Usually gets best by mid August and stays good until water cools in the fall and the shad go deeper. During the summer they stay in the upper part of the water column...feeding on zooplankton, which feed on phytoplankton...which form near the surface.

I can't remember what year it was, but the best boil I had ever seen was near the 4th of July. I was bank fishing the north dike and a boil started probably around 8 that night. It was massive, maybe the size of a football field. It lasted about 30 minutes and was trading turns with my fly rod and spinning rod catching wipers. The most impressive outing for me ever, anywhere fishing in my 30 plus years of fishing.

The biggest boil I ever saw on Willard Bay was on July 20th, 2007 between 11:00 and noon. It was the size of a football field between the south marina and the island and lasted 45 minutes to an hour. The wife and I caught 30+ wipers in the 19-22 inch range. Even had one jump a foot out of the water to grab a shadrap that was dangling over the side of the boat.
I doubt we'll ever experience anything like that again.

Got intoa couple boils last week. They didn't last long though. This week has been pretty slow for me. We did manage to catch a few wiper on the north east corner in all that vegetation.

That is a good spot to be when the boils start showing up the wipers trap the shad back in that bay and push them into the weed bed. good times back there in years past. [fishon] wish i still had a boat this should be a good year with the high water.
