Nils ice auger - FishingSteve - 12-12-2016

Just wondering if anyone in Idaho or Utah sharpens the Nils ice auger? Mine needs a tuneup. Thanks.

Give these guys a call and see if they can do it:

If not, you might have to ship it back East.

Hey I just got me a nils how do I prolong its life so I don't have to sharpen it very soon. Been amazed how fast it chews through the ice. But then again it's only been 2" thick so far so I guess it shouldn't take too long. Later J

Keep the cover on when not in use. Never pound it on the ice. Don't let anyone borrow it, cause they won't follow the rules!

Be extra careful to not let anyone pound it on the ice. Just a small bounce can knock it off.

Okay I think I've got them rules. I'm a little anal with my augers, I tell everyone that an auger is like your wife, it's not something you loan out. So if someone wants a hole I drill it rather than let them do it. Kind of selfish, but I know others won't be as careful with it as I am. I heard the horror story of a neighbor borrowing a guys ice auger to drill post holes and so I've always been a little over protective. But I used my last auger nearly 20 years and didn't have to replace the blades and it still worked really well. I think the nils will be a lot harder to get sharpened so I know I need to be really careful with it. Thanks for the info. J

Will do, no bouncing, set down lightly. Watchout for junk on or in the ice. I hope the nils will stay sharp if I'm careful. Thanks for the tips. J

You'll love the nils it's amazing. I also second the idea of drilling it for them and not letting anyone borrow it. I'll loan out my cheap one though.

Re: [TheFishSlayer] Nils ice auger - SkunkedAgain - 12-13-2016

I wasn't thinking very well and sold my other auger, figured I wouldn't need it any more. I do have a gas powered 10" though, but I'm pretty careful with it too. Not sure what I'll do this year, go electric nils and 6" holes or gas 10" holes. I know the nils is sure a lot faster and easier to get a hole, but I do like big holes once I'm fishing. Pretty excited to get out and find out what will work best. Hope we get a good ice season. Later J

I like the eight inch holes until and it's not often, i get a bigger than average fish. Then I'm always cussing! I also loose to much stuff down the bigger holes.

I have a spare 8 " auger . And then my main auger is a 10" that I have had for 12 years I like the 10 " best .I have a hard time getting the big fish at Henry's to turn there head up the holes . And they don't freeze over as fast

Re: [FishingSteve] Nils ice auger - SkunkedAgain - 12-14-2016

I used to have a 5" auger and it was too small when the ice started to get very thick at all it was hard to get even small trout pointed up and out of it. Worked fine for panfish and was way easier to drill by hand. I debated on whether to get 8" or 6" with the nils and decided I'd use it for my exploration holes and transducer holes and then when I'm ready to set up and stay I'd use the 10" for the fishing holes. Probably dumb to take both, but I'm hoping this way I don't stay on bad holes too long before I move since it will be easier to drill a hole to check things out. Hope it works. Later J

Re: [SkunkedAgain] Nils ice auger - FishingSteve - 12-16-2016

I called Frank DeLuca to get my Nils sharpened. Very nice guy, he said $20 plus shipping to and from his place. It has cost me $50 total, but well worth it if it cuts like new again. Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Re: [FishingSteve] Nils ice auger - Squarehog - 12-16-2016

Frank sharpened my 8 inch nils two or three seasons back and I've had it for five seasons but it needs sharpened again, or I may need to buy a new head but it's been a great auger, instead of buying a new head, at $110 I opted to buy a StrikeMaster Lazer 8 inch hand drill,, and got it for $70,which i cant wait to try.Smileand I keep an Eskimo 8-inch hand drill as a 2nd/backup.
