Starvation Ice Conditions? - wagdog - 01-12-2017

Has anyone been out to Starvation in the past couple of days? I know it has been colder at night out that direction but I've seen warmer temps reported during the day time. Just trying to get an idea of ice conditions before taking out the crew again. Thanks.

The attached UDOT picture of the bridge looks like Winter is going strong in the Basin

Thanks! Last time I checked the camera was down. Too bad UDOT doesn't check ice thickness and put that on their website.... j/k

I'm going over there in the morning if Indian Canyon is not closed. I think most of the lake has safe ice. Knight Hollow does for sure and that's probably where I'll be.

I'll post a report if I go over.

Wasn't aware of the udot camera, very handy for a feller like my self. Thanks for posting that. Last year I called the motel in town and asked how the snow conditions were. (to bring a wheeler or a sled) Though very nice and gave me good information I could tell there was a wth factor on the other end of the line....

Thank you for sharing...

Re: [wagdog] Starvation Ice Conditions? - fishday - 01-13-2017

Was out there yesterday in Rabbit and the ice was 2-4 in of clear ice with 0-4 in of slush/breakable crust on top. Access was limited as they only plowed to that fist lot past the first outhouse. Catching was slow. Drilled a lot of holes but no perch--not even a perch bite-- but my buddy did pull up a beautiful 22in eye on a little ice fly. Snowed all day and was still snowing when we left at 2. More snow up there than i've seen in a while. Hopefully the cold predicted for the next few days will freeze that slush

now is when we need a good blow to get the snow off and some nice sub 0 temps to make the ice grow.

Thanks for the update! That's too bad about the perch. I found a lot over the summer (which doesn't mean they'll be around in the winter). A big walleye like that can make you forget about the lack of perch. Did y'all target trout at all?

Just so you know, I didn't go over to Starvation today. I woke up at 0500 and it was still snowing here in Price. I figured Indian Canyon would be snowpacked and slick so I bagged the fishing for today. I just got done shoveling 3 new inches of snow.

Thanks for the update. I wouldn't want to drive in that mess either!

Thanks for report and kudos on the nice walleye.[Wink]

Is all of Rabbit Gulch capped or is there any open water left? I have been able to float tube toward the main channel while ice anglers were on the west end in past years.[Wink]

Thanks for any info you might have.

Ya the perch are where ya find em and we sure did not yesterday. But we will keep looking! That walleye probably equaled a limit of perch. Plan on going back for the new moon cycle in a couple of weeks if not before.
After a while we did start targeting trout and the Starvy steelheads didn't disappoint. My buddy landed a couple and I had one bite all day that turned out to be about a 4-5 pounder that swallowed my paddle bug and broke off with its head out of the hole. Arrrghh---but fun fight none the less!

We did not see any open water but couldn't see out to the mouth since it was snowing all day and was a ways from where we accessed the ice. The ice got thin in places with the deepest slush so it may be real thin near the mouth. We walked practically to the other side with no problem except for the slush pockets. One pucker moment was while i was standing on 2 in of ice, 3 in of slush, it cracked under my feet. Thinnest ice I have EVER been on for sure--fishing anyway...

Yeah that is a terrible feeling for sure. The thinnest I've been on was 2 inches and it started spiderwebbing as I was walking back to where I had gotten on the ice. I thought I was going in for sure. This fat boy needs at least 4 inches of good ice.
