Changing the oil in the Lower unit...7.5 horse motor.???
#1
So in general, I need to change/put oil into my lower end...and my motor too!! geez I left that door open.

It is a 7.5 HP motor, 1947 Champion. regaurdless it cant be that different to change the oil, grease, whatever in the lower end.

My question is, what kind of oil (grade, type, sysnthetic) to put in...and I can see 3 screws that go into the lower unit...so what is the procedure to change/add oil to the motor..its a 2-cycle so I am guessing this is the only oil in it..?? golly can you tell I am new at this...feelin "green".

what is the procedure? and what kind of oil do I use? I am sure I can do this myself I am good with wrenches..marine pro shops just tried to talk me into bringing it to them to get it done and did not divulge much info....I think they were not sure due to the motors age...

Not sure which oil it will use, but you will use a different oil than you mix with your fuel, but you might send an email to Lee's (click on their banner above). Be sure to unscrew the correct screws. One of those screws probably holds your gears together and if you remove it, you will have great fun putting everything back together. There is a big warning about this in the owner's manual for my outboard. Also, fill from the bottom up (you can purchase an inexpensive pump for this purpose) so that you pump out the air as you fill the unit.

80 to 90 wieght gear oil. Any marine dealer will have what you need and steer you in the right direction. They can show you the proper screws on a newer motor and yours should be almost identical.

if it has 3 screws in the lower unit there should be 2 on one side and a phillips head screw on the other.

DO NOT TAKE THE PHILLIPS HEAD OUT! ! ! ! ! ! or you will be bringing to me to put the lower shift forks back together

take the regular head screws out and let it drain and check for water and metal shaving if you have either you shold bring it to me to fix

then after all the old oil drains out put some lower unit oil in from the BOTTOM first pump it in until it comes out the top. this way you know for sure that its full and theres no air pockets in it. put the top screw in and this will create a vacume and give you a couple seconds to get the bottom plug in.

the sell hand pumps that screw onto the oil jugs that work great or if you'd like I'll let yo borrow mine or bring er by I'll do it for ya and show you how its extremly easy.
