Hey, we're in the process of planning our family vacation for this year. We were planning on going to yellowstone lake, but the week we are going is all booked. As I considered other options, fish lake came to mind (this is the big fish lake in southern utah). I've never been there and any info anyone could give me on what it's like would be great. We've always liked yellowstone because it's a place where even the little ones could throw a lure out in the water and catch a nice big cutt. Is fish lake the kind of place where you can catch nice fish without knowing too much about the area? What's the climate like, is it alpine or more desert-like? We have a small boat so we're not restricted to the shore, but we don't have much fancy fishing gear so it would have to be basic. Is there another place in Utah or Idaho that might suit our needs better? We plan on being on vacation the last week of June. Thanks a lot.

Try this website. I love fishing the lake but because of the weedline you might need a boat.

Fish lake is best if fished from a boat. You dont need high tech gear to catch fish there. When i usd to have a boat trolling pop gear worked good for rainbows and splake for me.Also the lake is full of perch so the kids can catch them all day long non stop. The limit there is 50 also they make great bait when jigging. I used to use spoons to catch the rainbows where it drops off from like 20 to 80 feet.

Dear O.D.F [Tyler].
Fish Lake is an Alpine Lake. It is 8300 ft. in altitude. Lot's of Pine and Quakey. It has the most spectacular views. Very limited in bugs. Has two very nice restaurants. Lot's of cabins to rent from basic to plush. Lot's of camp sites, some group sites. Also some free camping five to seven miles from the lake. The water is deep and cold not suitable for swimming, unless you are crazy. Lot's of catchable Rainbows, Splake, and small Perch. If you are lucky there is always a chance to catch a big Mackinaw. Welcome to the board. P.M. me if you have any more questions. Pikeman on Da Bombs computer.

Well, now the secret's out! Fishlake is a super place to spend some time with your family. We have an annual family reunion there and some great memories and adventures have come from there.
As the others have said, it's best fished with a boat either trolling (my preference) or bait fishing out past the weed line. Sometrips are more productive than others but always a great time. Can be cold in the evening and mornings but warms up well during the day, an occasional afternoon rain later in the summer. Rent a cabin and stay a few days, you will really enjoy it.

Thanks guys, it sounds great. I've heard about the lake now and again but until now I've never had details from someone who's acutally been there. Sounds like a great place, though. How big is the average fish you catch while trolling? At Yellowstone it always seemed the fish were 14-18 inches, except for the occasional lake trout. Does it matter where you fish on the lake? Does it matter when?

Fishlake is a beautiful lake, and it stays cold because of the snow run-off and it's very deep. Lots of macks, trout splake, and perch. It is better to be out on the boat than from the shoreline because the weeds can extend for more than 50 feet from shoreline.
Cheeseholes is a mack spot... ask any local who runs the bowery haven and they will point you exactly where that spot is. They can get big as 20 pounds with a few in the 30 category.
Perch are found in the weedlines or in the bare areas with surrounding weeds. They are a bunch of dinks. Stunted if you will. Just outside the weedlines are a whole bunch of splakes and trout. Trout can get up to around 24-28 inches. Splakes are slightly under trout in terms of size average. However there are some trophy splakes in there.
Because of its high elevation, it's best to be prepared with warm clothes because of its night-time temps. Good luck and book early too!

yOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH FISH LAKE IT'S ABSOULUTLY BEAUTIFUL AND THE SUMMER TEMP'S ARE GREAT. MY DAUGHTER (4YEAR'S OLD) FELL IN LOVE WITH IT BECAUSE SHE COULD CATCH PERCH AFTER PERCH ON THE WEED LINE AND THE ACTION FOR THEM IS ALWAY'S GOOD. aS FOR THE RAINBOW'S THEY AVERAGE 13-19 INCHES FAIRLY REGULARLY THE SPLAKE ARE 14-17 INCHES WITH ALOT GOING BIGGER ON OCCASION AND THE MACK'S VERY i CAUGHT ONE 15INCHES LAST YEAR AND THE I CAUGHT ONE 17 POUND'S SO WHO KNOW'S WHAT YOU WILL GET.
We alway's stay at Mackinaw Campground and it's looking right at the center of the lake. The only draw back is the lodge Marina is really shallow So you might want to use one of the other Marina's.
You'll Love It

In answer to your other questions the rainbows are a half a pound to a pound and a half average. The splake are 6 - 16 inches. The mack go anywhere from 3 pound to 40 pound. Depending on how skilled you are. July is the best month of the summer for temperatures at night. Been known to have afternoon showers. There is a pamplet in the main lodge that will tell you about the bike trails and the look out points on myatobee ( spelling ? ) mountain. P.S. I fish 2-3 days a week ice fishing. I fish alomost every weekend in the summer. We have our family reunions there. There is no where else. E-mail me for personal advice if you want more.

ODF, My family & I will be there mid June. I have only fished it during the winter. I have talked with many people, they all say it is a great family camping area. I will make sure to give you detailed fishing/camping report with pictures. Plan on fishing from boat. I will try trolling & jigging to see what works best. FISHON............
