SHREVEPORT, LA-The 13.63-pound largemouth bass Bass Pro Shops pro angler Russ McVey landed recently while fishing Louisiana's ed River is set to become a new state record.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist James Seales says the agency has been stocking the Red River with Florida largemouth bass and as such he says it hasn't yet been determined whether McVey's bass is a native largemouth or a Florida strain. Regardless, Seales says McVey's fish is probably at least 8 years old.
McVey's bass measured 25½ inches long with a 23/-inch girth. It will be shipped to Bass Pro's corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for testing before moving onto a Bass Pro aquarium somewhere in the country.
