MrWiskers, Chick, HBSP Night Toruny, 6-20, 6-21-2009, Jmax
#1
Jmax and I decided to fish the 7-2 night tourny out of HBSP tonight. We launched and headed up river (which was one of if not the roughest boat rides I have ever been on) where Jmax killed them on Thursday only to find a boat camped out on the spot. We decided to fish a near by ledge and glad we did. We were both throwing drop shots (which until tonight I had never caught a fish on) and we started catching fish right off the bat. My first fish on a drop shot ever turned out to be a 15 lb blue cat. Great battle on my spinning rod at 6lb line. After boating a couple of short fish I boated a 5 lb channel on the drop shot. May start catting with them. After about an hour I finally put of first keeper in the boat, a solid 3 lber on the drop shot. Jmax on the other had was killing the 12-14 inchers but did finally put a keeper in the boat before dark. Jmax was using a small worm and I was using the 4" Powerminnows on my drop shot. Fish were in about 18-25 feet of water.
At dark we made a more to a grass bed and Jmax proceeds to put two more keepers in the boat. Both fish came on worms in 4-7 feet of water.
Our next area was Wolftever to chase some of Jmax's pets. We started out slow but managed to put our final keeper in the boat and cull one. We also boated a few short fish and I hooked what felt like a good fish but it pulled off as it was getting ready to jump. Fish were caugth in 10-12 feet on worms and Midnight special spinnerbaits with Chigger craw trailers.
We headed back out to Harrison Bay to our final spot. We ended up culling three more times and Jmax got a nice fish in the 4-4.5 lb range to anchor our limit. These fish were all boated on worms in less than 10 feet.
The last fish we put in the well was hooked in a bad place and bled out in the livewell and died about 20 minutes before weigh in. So we only got to weight in 4 for 12.75 lbs. With the dead fish we would have been around 15.25 lbs. Took 22 lbs or so to win with big fish over 7 lbs. In the dark we could not tell the fish was bleeding but it died too quick to have been anything else. The fish that died came out of 5 feet of water so it was not an air bladder issue and it was only in the well for about an hour or so.
We end up boating 26 largemouth (10 keepers), 2 spots, 1 channel, 1 blue and a warmouth. Awsome evening on the water. Thanks for the ride Jmax, it was fun.
