Down by the Riverside
#1
Took a little run over to the Bear river after work to enjoy the hot sun, and cool water. Had a red-mepps spinner left on from last trip, so I pitched it. Wasn't but a couple casts before I had bumps and ping - a hookup. Just a bitty bass, but it had attitude! Pitched it back with a promise it wouldn't tell anyone else.
So kept pitching - kept ending up with heavy line. But they weren't snags - snags don't swim sideways and jump! Stepped up to some teen sized bass .

Had a spot where river connects to back water, and it seemed to have drawn in a school of smallmouths at the mouth. So I kept hooking up, lost a number, caught a number more. Stepped up to a chunky 13, then a hunky 14, and the climax fish was a beefy 15 incher!
[inline Phatties.jpg]

Though I had one hookup that took up - some line, and ran ran. You'd think an older more mature fish would know to hang onto that snack! But he spit it back at me.
Pretty sure they were all smallmouths. Took one shot with the mouth closed.

The mepps was on fire - kept thinking I should change up to something else, then - badabing - a crappie, nice one. Got a few more mixed in with the bass. Couple dinks, but a few decent ones.

Tried to focus on my second rod, and - as expected - if I'd pay attention - I see the tap tap bites. But they were being very clever, and keeping my hooks clean. I did hook up a couple, and was pleased to find it was young channels messing with me, not mudcats!

The moon came up, the bugs came out, and I bugged out. Nice productive afternoon after work. I didn't give them names, but probably pulled in about 30 fish, and missed a bunch more feeble attempts.

I forget how the song goes but lets look at these bass and figure out which one is different. Which bass is not the same. LOL

You do have a picture of one dirty little smallmouth in your post and the largemouths colors are pretty washed out.

Nice batch of fish no matter what they are. It beat going home with only a stringer of bug bites down your arm.

(edit)

One hint the small mouth pic isn't embeded in the post.

Great post CYS.....you almost fish as much as us these days! Pretty amazing for a mod[Wink]. Based on the photos of the bass....do I dare say those are Largemouths? Have only caught a handful of those this year so perhaps my indentification skills are a bit off? Afterall I was wrong on the Red Ear!

Thanks for posting and keep them coming!

They're so washed out from the murky water, it's hard to tell for sure on the first one, but the others are definitely largemouth. Looks like you found an awesome little area.

Just replying to the last reply. Thanks all for the kind feedback. It's fun to get "into em" once in a while. Had a few dinks, but most were footlong or better. No supertoads, except that one that got away.

True those bass don't take on the rich green colors of ones in say - Mantua. In retrospect - I think the first one pictured (not embedded - the dirty one) is a smallie. Had the red-eye, and browner mottled pattern. Think I had several smaller smallies, but the biggest ones were largemouths - as you knowledgable bassers have identified.

It was funny - I was reeling in a worm, and just dangling it over the shore-ledge, and wham - got one of the biggest - not two feet off the bank! Beast!
All sharing the same area.

And Skunked - you know it well. I think I need to try a night trip there WITH bugspray!
Saw numerous "boils" as panicked widdle fish got swooped along the shore. I was just hoping some of the predators might be of the toothy sort ... didn't find any gills or sunfish, and only a half dozen Crappie. Couldn't keep the bass off! Maybe if I'd downsized might select more crappie. Pull out the ice jigs and the glow?

The first really nice largemouth that I caught out of Deer Creek was on salmon eggs when I was reeling them in. I could see them as they were coming in and they were spinning a little when the fish came roaring out of the depths and grabbed them and took off. Scared me half to death when it happend.

A Yote I don't dare admit how many times I've been Skunked out there this summer so this report really makes me look bad. I'm going to have to follow you around and see if I can learn something. Had a bunch of crappie jumping all around Friday and couldn't buy a bite. I justified my luck as must have been too hot. Guess that wasn't it, must be me. Anyway way to go. Later J
