Flaming Gorge from shore??
#1
Heading to FG/vernal this weekend with the family just wondering if there are any areas other than the visitor center to fish from shore? Any suggestions would be great, only have fished there on a boat a few times but won't have one this weekend

There are literally hundreds of places to fish from shore at the Gorge. I can't speak as much for the Utah side since I used to live in Green River WY, but I used to fish that lake from shore almost daily.

I can assure you of great shore fishing anywhere from the pipeline area all the way up to Lost Dogh closer to Green River or Firehole on the Rock Springs side. Lost Dog up north has some good access but the water from shore can be a bit shallow and snag prone from the accessible areas. Good places to catch SMB this time of year at dusk and dawn. Firehole has some deeper access and you can catch bass or trout. You might even get into some good size channel cat up there too.

The Buckboard area is my favorite shore fishing spot. There are trails everywhere around Buckboard and South Buckboard with great access. For Rainbows I tend to go farther into the bay off the small points and fish any traditional Rainbow trout method. Most day you will slaughter em in there. Most are between 16 and 20 in. Lots of big fish. Always a few good size smallies swimming around too. Last time I went shore fishing there my wife caught a 4 lb smallie on a stationary floating worm and marshmellow rig. Weird. Take the roads out to South Buckboard if you want shore access to 50 ft depths or more. In the spring when the water is still cold and around when they stock the lake you will find tons of large Rainbows, Browns, and Lake Trout just hanging around 10 to 30 ft waiting for easy stocked meals I assume. Anything that looks like a stocked size fish will catch em.

Buckboard is where I catch most of the big Smallies, but Anvil draw is where you can go and catch big numbers of them. There are a lot of shallows there with close access to deep water so there seem to be large populations of SMB hanging out there.

That lake is 90 miles long. There are so many great places to shore fish, that the question was almost offensive! Not really, but go explore FG. Its one of the absolute best fisheries I have ever experienced. You might even get into some ugly Burbot. Good eating I hear. No limit and they can not be returned to the water.

Good luck.

You can catch bass and trout from shore all along the lower section of the lake. The first marina by the dam(cant remember the name) has some good fishing for smallmouth as does sheep creek area. Trout early and late in the day.
