Auger drill assemdly recovery ideas??
#1
So my brother and my father were drilling a hole with our Jiffy and apparently didn't secure the pin with the collar and the pin came out then the drill assembly fell through the hole. We went up with some large magnets but could not get them to pull it far off the bottom. Any of you have experience with this type of conundrum? It's in 28' of water and we only have the one hole to work with. Try to figure if we can get some type of grappling hook under it some how but if anyone else has any ideas we are open. Thanks!

Use a chain saw then go scuba diving for it. That's all I got. [laugh]

Gotta hate too watch an auger go for a nice dipping.

Try a youtube search. Seen a video once where they had an underwater camera (helps!) and tried all kinds of things. Think it was a rod holder that finally made the hookup. Very dramatic editing and music if I recall.

A cam would help for sure as well as another hole in the ice if possible. Also (retrieving magnets) from Harbor freight. They sell several sizes including one rated to lift 240lb's and their rather cheap as I recall. You also might want to look at their lawn sweep magnet made for retrieving nails because its about 30"'s long.

Personal, I would send 3 or 4 of their 100lb or150lb rated mags down on different ropes hoping to get them all to grab before lifting

I've successfully rescued a rod with one of my cameras but not in 30ft of water. I have the cabelas under water viewing systems and they are only $100 right now. Plus they are fun to fish with when you're done rescuing your auger. If you're close to Brigham city I'd let you borrow ne of my cameras and my manual auger with $140, 100% returnable deposit. Does your auger have the ring around the botto
If so you could snag that buy drilling a hole directly above it. Let me know

What lake is it in? I have a 10' auger, underwater camera, and a grapple hook. I can assist if it is somewhere close.

Pineview. I forgot to mention the lake. my dad and brother are going out again this afternoon with a stronger magnet. I have to work but if that is close by that would be awesome! we've been doing well in that particular spot so at least you would I know where the Fish are hanging out :-)

A cheap try would be a dog chain collar , tie a rope in a y fashion, run a cloths hanger wire through the center knot and tie onto each end of the dog chain collar (so as to hold it in a open loop) if you can get the chain around the auger, pulling on slowly, the weight of the auger should make the wire collapse and fold the chain around the auger.
Another option would be a couple of pieces of sprinkler pipe glued together with an electrician fish tape ran through the center. fold the end around the pipe and duct tape it to the pipe. You should be able to push the fish tape through the pipe to male a expanding loop which you can pull tight if you can get it around the auger. (sprinkler pipe is cheap, and fish tape can be rented)
Of coarse you will need a camera so you can see what your doing. Good Luck

I have a game hook used to hang deer out of your rafters that could be attached to a rope and dropped down the hole. I live about 3 miles from the mouth of Ogden canyon if interested. Also have a new underwater camera and auger if needed.

The Weber county Search and Rescue is doing an ice dive up there on Feb. 1st after the Polar Plunge, if you haven't recovered it by then.

Where in Pineview, they usually do their ice dives off of swim beach.

I spent 17+ years on the dive team and know all of them, I might be able to make a suggestion on where to make the next dive.

We came, we tried, we failed! Pounded bottom with 2 foot long hooks trying to snag it. Almost had it twice but no luck.

Try a light gauge cable (picture hanging wire) with
3-4 half hitches held in place with tape or thread that will give way when pulled on and tie both ends to Para Shoot cord. Lower it down to the auger shaft. Move it as close to the auger as possible. Carefully pulling on both cords will tighten the hitches, then lift with only one cord. Trying to catch the auger end will be very hard do to the screw design of the auger.

You may consider getting two pieces of 1/2 inch black t & c pipe. Split them in half and thread the cut ends. Weld a gentle hook to the end of one, as you feed this end down add the next ten feet on with the thread and coupler. The cutting end of the auger should have the loop or the support for you blade that you can hook onto. Make sure that the hook on the end near perpendicular to the pipe and long enough to stay attached to the auger when it goes vertical. It sounds like you have a camera so you can see what you are doing. You must know a person that can help you build this contraption.

Many thanks to WiperMac for the effort! I have a similar idea as exedrin69 with some pvc and a hooky scoopy attachment(yeah I said hooky scoopy :-)). I've seen where they practice rescue dive and unfortunately we lost it near the islands in the middle fork area but I gotta good feeling about this attempt. I will be up there tomorrow in the early afternoon if anyone else with a cam happens to be around that might be nice.

Pounding bottom with large meat hooks and oversized magnets had little to no effect. All it did was kick up the mud and make the camera completely worthless. The only way you're going to get that thing up is with the rigid pole and gaff hooks that you can drag across the bottom. I suggested something similar to your dad but I think you're on to something with the PVC.

Keep your hook bend as close to the size as the attached picture. That size hook grabbed hold of my 8" power anger very well and didn't let go, even with the additional weight of the motor. Good luck!
