I spent 5 days exploring some beautiful areas of Wyoming. Except for some hail, lightning, and 3 days of drenching rain it was an amazing time.
Next time I need to order up some better weather. The roads were a bit iffy getting back out. But even on the days of heavy rain there were enough breaks for the fishing to come back and pick up again. The fish were beautiful and cooperative enough to come up for drys even when conditions weren't very good.
The water was clear and very cold still. I was able to wet wade on most days except during the really cold and nasty windy weather.
First pool
And first fish... Small but very feisty!
Size improved as I got further into the willow thickets where the deeper pools were hidden.
But first I had to get up high enough to find a way into and back out of the willow mazes!
I got into a really nice area, but I wasn't catching anything. I was just about to change my fly when I heard a huff. I looked upstream at the next pool and three large otters slid into the water. They dived in under a cut bank where they must have had a large area hollowed out for them to all fit in. One poked his head back out and huffed at me several times. He watched me carefully until I moved on and left their fishing holes. I only got a picture of the one. Wish I could have gotten a picture of all three. At least now I knew why I wasn't catching anything there. They had already had lunch!
Other things came in threes too. I saw a lot of deer including a group of three bucks in velvet that were looking very nice. But this doe with three fawns was my favorite. It was dusk and they were moving so my pictures didn't come out, but you can still sort of see them. I've seen lots of them with twins, but this was the first set of triplets that I had seen in person.
The wildflowers where in all their glory also.
But the fish weren't to be out done.
Some had fine spots.
Some had lots of medium spots
And some had large spots.
Some had few spots
And some had very fine spots. I loved this one's pink blush.
One thing about cutthroats is that they have lots of very sharp teeth that are tough on both hands and flies.
All in all, it was an outstanding time to be doing time in Wyoming.
