Hmmmmm, I've been debating on wether to post a few pics of our last fishin trip, because I'll hear a bunch of crap about how my technique could be better, and such<sarcasm>.
We made a short road trip and both of us had 30+ fish days, and later his brother drove up and met us, and I'm not sure of how many he caught, but I watched him catch the same fish 12 times....ok maybe not the same fish, but he didn't move his feet and caught 12 fish, all about the same size, and that's what we were telling him...that it was the same fish.
Between us we had probably 4 fish of 20"...and my bro caught his best Brown ever.
We've had better days in the numbers, but the average size of our fish was probably around 14"...we saw the biggest brown(in peson-not pics of), biggest whitefish I've seen caught, plenty of Rainbows, and a few Cutts...
Note to self- NEVER don't wear a layer of longjohns, or fleece under your waders. Our core temps dropped on what would have been a pretty nice day if we hadn't been in and ouit of the water trying to warm up.
Oh, I also got a new fly rod, and the first pic is of the first brown I caught with it- the streamer is(if you can see it too well)just below its jaw- brown sculpin head.

Last picture is awesome. Why don't you want to wear long johns or fleece under waders? That is what I wearin the winter and am fine for several hours. Now cotton on the other hand, like sweets is a no no.

Don't worry the fish don't know that you don't know how to properly flyfish [laugh]. I also get a laugh out of only one way to fish thinking. I have the nerve to nymph using a single beadhead nymph, tied directly to fluorocarbon leader without tippet and without an indicator on rods many consider too light. Granted I don't always nymph that way when fishing bigger rivers you'll find outside of Utah. I also generally consider a dozen trout an hour fishing that way to be mediocre fishing most of the year. More importantly I enjoy the simple quick set up, accuracy of casting a single fly, versatility of fishing different runs without having to adjust a rig setup and sensitivity it provides in detecting strikes. So learn from others and try things out but fish mostly what works for you and you enjoy most. It's fishing after all.

I'll be anxious to try your recipe for nymph fishing the next time I'm out. The benefits and ease of the rig are appealing.
On his podcasts, Tom Rosenbauer says to never let anyone tell you that your fly fishing technique is wrong. I think his point is to encourage experimentation, and when trout (like on the Provo River) have seen a thousand presentations looking exactly same, mixing it up is a good way to shake things up.

My advice if you haven't nymph fished without an indicator much is to start with a lighter rod as it will be much easier to detect strikes until you get the hang of it. Not really that hard but if your using a 6 wt to start you'll miss a lot more.

Good advice. I picked up an Allen Myth 8.5' 4 wt. at the fly fishing expo. I haven't fished with it yet, but will that do the job?

My biggest fish I caught on the provo was with this technique, but it was very hard to tell when it hit but it was with a 6wt

A 4 wt should be great for this here in Utah. An 8'6" 4 or 5wt rod really hits my sweet spot with the combo of casting accuracy and distance. Hopefully that'll work well for you too.

I was being sarcastic about my set up- the fish we catch are proof enough for me that iits a solid set-up.
FG- I used a double negative in my NOTE to self- I left my fleece at home, and just wore a pair of light weight scrub bottoms- not good!

I think you were pretty clear that you were being sarcastic about the setup. The last fish is a nice one. Yesterday was cold especially in the morning. Hopefully those days are about gone for another 6 months.
