PV 5/30

Met up with fellow BFT member Tlarson and one of his buddys at Pineview yesterday morning. I barley started kicking out from shore and a large TM came swimming by. It got right in front of me stopped..turned and looked straight at me. It was so close it would have been pointless to cast so I teased him a bit with my streamer. He was not impressed. I was able to snap a picture before he moved on.

Tlarson and i were not having any luck and neither was his friend that was shore fishing. I was getting bored and defeated around hour 2 of skunkness. and then....

little tug...bigger tug...I set the hook and my line just started ripping off my reel. Then all of a sudden dead stop. It was still on but it just seemed like dead weight so im thinking.. monster carp? I reel in a bit then off it goes again. Fight its on with some huge fish me in my pontoon and a 5 weight rod. Its going insane at this point. I wasn't to far from shore so I thought i would get my feet on solid ground. I was simultaneously fighting the fish and trying to kick into shore. Whatever it was it was to big for my net. when I was almost to shore it finally showed its self....Muskie..big muskie! I finally made it to shore and got off my toon. It still was fighting like hell but i finally got it in. I didn't want to drag it on the sand and none of us had a big enough net. I hadded my rod to the guy one shore so I could get a picture. I was fumbling with my phone and that sucker had one more brust....I blew it.. he flipped cut my line and was gone. I yelled, sreamed, swore... you name it.

Tlarson was still on his pontoon and said he took a couple pic's from a distance. I hope they turn out...its my only hope. At least I had witnesses. Once I got a good look at it it wasn't quite the beast it seemed like but it was well over 30" and on a 5 weight?? What a awesome experience. If Tlarson's picture turns out decent he said he would post it for me.

Here is the picture of the one that I saw when I first got there. Might be the one I ended up catching but theres no way to know for sure.

Steve: ill be going back on monday. know you probably work but if you can make it that would be awesome. I was just using my furled leader with about 18" of 10lb spider wire. I was intending to catch bass, maybe a carp.the tiger was just a surpise.. nothing special about the fly. It was just a Black and Olive bugger.

Evil: I haven't had to much luck with the bass at PV yet this year. There are plenty of perch fly patterns. I ve been thinking about trying to tie some. Ive been catching bass at Mantua on the the same black/olive bugger as the Muskie. Also been usuing a couple other patterns but basically the same colors. Black,olive,brown..etc. In like size 6 or 8.

Headcam? Ive been thinking about it. Steve has a cool one. I also need a bigger net..haha!

Is this the same black/olive bugger that I traded you some TD gear for at Mantua last year? Already lost it likely[frown]. This sunday we are heading up to Mantua...be great to see you there. We are gonna bring the fly rod along this time...as well as the spin rod of course. Let TDT and I know bro.

Not the same one. I need to tie some more for this weekend anyway so if I run into you on sunday ill give you guys a couple. But.. you can only use it on a fly rod and you have to release any fish you catch on it.[sly] My father in law is coming up from Cali and i plan on taking him to Mantua sunday and PV monday.

JLG, I love hearing how you stick with the fly. You don't switch to spinning when the going gets tuff. You are my hero right now. Give me a shout next week, lets go get that puppy.

Anytime... PV is easy for me like a 10 min drive. So just say when.. ill be up there a lot more now that its starting to warm up. That was only my second trip to PV this year. And thanks for the encouragement.. I've really been putting a lot of effort into the fly rod this year. I definitely can't say ive been catching more fish then the spinning rod but when I do its way more exciting!!!

I am free next week except Thursday. But you guys got to tell me where to go when I get there. I know the boat launch by the dam and the one at swim beach or whatever it is called, but where do you all launch your toons?

So I've heard you talk about these furled leaders before, and others saying how much they like them, so let me display my ignernz - what's a furled leader and what makes them so cool?

Here's a PERCH pattern fly. Seen a number tied up on Youtube, but I don't think I have the right materials.

TDT - if you check in with Musky shops - you'l find a lot of spinner/bucktail lures that follow a perch or firetiger pattern.
I've had some success with some perch pattern bucktail jigs.

One thing about a Musky - if it wants to, it takes off, but they're so experienced - seems like sometimes they just go dead stop and you think they're gone.... but they're NOT!
