taking wife and grandkids to grand canyon for few days. Then back up to page, arizona , and try my luck on the stripers. Is this time of year even good for stripers? Any body have any ideas on where the stripers are this time of year? I have heard they are very agressive and fight unlike any other fish. Any truth to that? Any tips for rookies would be appreciated.

Lake Powell is a lot of fun. Stripers do fight really hard. Are you going to have a boat. I had a lot of luck driving around early morning and in the mouth of Padre Bay on the east side there are some walls that the stripers were pinning the shad against and then the boil would start the year ling stripers are what we mostly caught on top water and shallow diving lures that look like shads. I mostly had newbies fishing so they were in heaven catching fish every cast. I took some shad imitating soft pastics with a small weight and if it got past the little guys on top down to the 30 foot depth I would hook into some bigger fish. If you dont have a boat Wahweap has a fishing pier. Buy some anchovies and hook a half of one on to a 1/8oz jig head with a 3/0 hook i think that is the size I have even done it weight less I takes longer to sink but catch rate for me has been higher. If you take kids the have some trees that are in the water in that same area and a small jig with a tip of worm keeps them entertaned. I was down there less then a week ago. We also got into 2 large mouths in the 4lbs range and lots of very nice small mouths. Some of the biggest small mouths were caught fishing the striper boils. As soon as the sun got over the steep walls the fishing died off untill the evening. If you have a boat I can try to help you out more as always check out waynes words awesome website just for lake powell info. GOOD LUCK

thank you for that info . And yes i will have a boat. Wahweap is where we will be camping. Your trip sounded rewarding, as well as entertaining. If our trip turns out to be even half as entertaning as yours, I would be grateful. Thanks again.

Fishing is good there everywhere. For some great recent reports, as mentioned above , go to wayneswords.com. Read his report, but also check out the anglers corner tab. This is where anglers post their recent trip info and pics

Best place to get up to date information is Waynesworld.com.
I just returned from a Lake Powell fishing trip and getting into a big striper boil is about the funnest fishing you'll ever have.
Go out early and start looking near canyon mouths or in the backs of one recommended by Wayne.
Once you're in them, don't leave them. When the boils are over, troll the area with Shad lures.
Bait fishing has been slow this year from all reports (and mine experience was the same). So I wouldn't bother with the stinky Anchovies this year.
Hunt for boils early. Troll and Jig the schools later in the day.
I found the best thing for boils was a silver and blue castmaster... 3/4 - 1oz depending on your line strength.
Trolling was good with anything that resembled a Shad... but blue/silver colors seemed best.
