Campeche Tarpon
#1
Fished Campeche, MX again for tarpon the last week of Jan. A cold front had just passed a couple days before I arrived, so the tarpon were moody. They don't like "cold" temperatures like we had in the 60's and 70's. Cooler temps. combined with some very low winter tides made it tough. However, I did catch fish every day, and saw fish in fair numbers a few times every day. My daily catches were between 2 and 5 fish a day. It was the toughest fishing I've had there in 4 trips though. I wore a sweat shirt on the first and second boat rides every morning, but daytime and evening temperature were quite comfortable for humans.

On the brighter side, I'm returning the last week of March, and it will be warmer, mostly in the 80's and low 90's that the tarpon like, and the tides will be very favorable the week I'm going.

That area doesn't have many species available, but I did catch a few small snook. There aren't any big ones because the Campechanos eat 'em! And same with the snappers, sharks, barracuda, and most other fish that swim there. Locals leave the tarpon alone, thankfully. Except for schools of tarpon and mullet, the flats are fairly barren, especially compared to somewhere like the Keys, where there's fish all over the place. Its kinda nice in a way though, because if you see a shadow/fish coming, chances are its a tarpon.

Sounds like a great trip even if slower than most. I have that same blue shirt as in the last picture. I only use it fishing in very hot sunny places but try not to get photographed wearing it[laugh].

Its "functionable" as my wife would say. I wear it on spring creeks on blue-sky days too. Summer camo!
