Henry's Lake
#1
Took my son up to Henry's yesterday for some bank fishing. We had a great time despite the rain and moderate wind. Arrived about 9 am and got into fish almost immediately. Landed two and lost two in the first ten minutes. After that it slowed a little then got slow after an hour. From then on it was brief spurts. We used spoons with holographic tape. Silver and green seemed to work best. Finally called it about 1pm but figure we landed around twenty fish plus several foul hooked. Took two home. They measured 18.5" and 20". I managed a couple that were a little giver but not much. Either way it was a great day.

Went this weekend with my wife and grand daughter. Couldn't have asked for any better weather. The fish were biting black leach patterns. Still a lot of weeds in the lake. Water temps were around forty. We caught one nice cutthroat and a couple of smaller ones. Thanks to the people who gave us the fly that caught the fish.

The weekend was great weather and great fishing! black leeches is the mainstay for me up there.. i had fished the state park with the crowds for 2 hours and caught one cutt. i then made the move to somewhere else i caught 12 cutthroat in about an hour. Fished there until dark and broke my fly rod on a massive hybrid.... never landed him,. 9 lbs easily all i ever saw was a massive tail.

I was able to get up to Henry's last Saturday and it was a good day. Fishing seemed to be good from first light to 9:00 and then for us it shut down. Is that very typical of Henry's? I have ice fished it, but I am fairly new to the open water fishing on the lake. We did catch one really nice cutthroat right at 26 inches, along with a handful of average sized fish. I saw some guys fishing with I believe needle fish and they did pretty well. What are the best lures you guys are having luck with? Best flies or chornomids? We were using panther martins and soaking sucker meat and night crawlers with garlic marshmallows. I'd mostly fly fish, but with a few in the boat it would have been difficult. Any help for this novice spinning gear fisherman would be well appreciated.

The 9 ok shut off is the norm for me. I had a day a couple weeks ago where they hit all day...that is very unusual.

Fly fishing I like Bill Schiess patterns see his book. 1.) Halloween 2.) electric black leech. 3.) copper crystal bugger. Size 8 -3x long. If I'm casting and stripping type 2 line. If I'm wind drifting/trolling type 3 or 4.

Ice fishing I often leave to warm up and get lunch in West Yellowstone and come back for the evening bite.
