Sorry for my late reply.
I haven't read anything official from the DEC why Salmon #'s increased this Fall.
But, you can bet all aspects from Egg, parr, smolt to adult were very successful.
There can be 100 reasons or variables. Here are a few.
More natural reproduction.
Stronger genetic year class.
Plenty of food in the lake.
Less predation of smolts as they enter the lake.
Ben rearing projects working better.
Mild Winter.
#1 Reason - I was in charge of stocking Salmon every morning at the mouth of the river. Once they ran to the top of river, I would put them in my truck and release again at mouth of river so they would re-run the river again.
I must'a made 50 trips in my truck filled with 1,000 Salmon each day.
