The weather was just too good today. I had to get out!! emoGeezer I put the boat in around 10am at DB. Gulls were diving in the back of a deep pocket so I grabbed a couple rods and starting casting. The fish were spread out even though they were backed up in the pocket. I threw crankbaits, jerkbaits and bucktails. I was trying out a couple of new Spinning rods and reels - one that Fat Albert built for me and one that I bought on the forum. I picked up the one I bought on the forum first and cast and about the fifth time the line twisted up and I had to cut some of it off emoBang I opened up one of my compartments where I keep my clippers and there is my herring juice upside down and spilling into the compartment - emoBang So for the next several minutes I am pulling stuff out and wiping down the compartment and about the time I finish wiping the compartment there is a huge fish (probably striper) that busts behind the boat. I grab the closest rod and reel which is a baitcaster and try to flip a crankbait back to the ripples - only I must have doen something to the reel brake because I end up with a backlash emoAngry Now I have line all over the deck, tools and lures and towels - emoZipped I am thinking what next - Then a second big fish breaks the surface - looked like a big bass - I just try to patiently get a handle on everything emoZipped Finally I am back fishing and I get a couple hits but can't set the hook emoScratch I decide to move and the gulls seem to disappear anyway. I try some secondary points and around noon I catch my first fish - its a big drum - Dang I thought it was a striper! I get a couple bumps and set the hook - I reel in a yellow bass. I pick up the bucktail on the money rod and reel and throw it out n about 16 -18 FOW and I hook my first bass. Nice 3+ - I then cattch two more nice ones including a five and quarter football (so fat it won't lay in the net for its picture) It rolls out twice before I can snap the pic and release it. I am thinking I need to try to catch something on Fat Albert's custom rod to break it in. I toss a tricked out bucktail toward the shore and BAM! I think I might be snagged except it starts moving. Pretty green fish pushing 3++. Missed a couple more and then call it day. Four bass at around 16 lbs one 8 lb drum and tiny yellow bass and 6 missed bites. Ran into Labman and he informed me that he was close by on a school of stripers and caught a couple of nice ones. He tries out my spinning rod and reel bought on the forum and it seems to not cast very far which is the problem I was having emoScratch I guess I will have to try some different line maybe of a different rod cause the reel seems fine to both of us. Can't wait to LM pics of his stripers! Tight lines
