I have had a couple of them. I agree with the others that the small tanks will freeze mine did today.
If you add a larger tank you have two options. Most hoses are rated for low pressure. The regular hoses will leak plasticizers into the fuel. Those Plasticizers will flow to the goose neck in the fuel line to the pilot light.

Option 1 a filter can be used. I have one but I didn't like it my self. It seemed like it didn't allow enough fuel through it. Maybe it was plugged by the Plasticizers?

Option 2 use a hose that is made to be used like this. Read up on it and see the one here.

If you have been using the wrong hose it will act like you are saying. Fuel won't go pass the goose neck. You can purge it by putting on a small tank and pushing the pilot button. Then rotating the heater to allow the fuel to push out the "oils"
