Having caught a couple thousand steelhead on the salmon river it is a disappointment to see the run so depleted and I believe the lack of pressure will really increase the chances of success as I have also had decent success on really bad years because I believe the fishing pressure there will be cut by about half. When I look at the numbers however and evaluate the fish I usually catch there and their size it is staggering to realize that the one ocean fish will be about 5 to 10 % of the ten year average. What has been amazing to me over the last ten years is my first look recently has almost always been the Clearwater which gets about 10 % the pressure the first week of November as the Salmon with fish that average three times the size and fight. My fall success has actually been nearly equal to or better on the Clearwater as the Salmon.
