Strawberry (Soldier Creek) 6/27-30 (more video)
#1
Went to Strawberry for some fishing/camping on the 27th through the 30th. Aspen Grove campground finally has the water on, so fished out of that marina.

The wind was, as usual, relentless from late morning to early evening, so we fished mornings and evenings. The fish finder was showing fish all through the column, with a lot of activity between 40-50 feet -- assumed to be Kokanee. We were able to hook up to the salmon periodically, but had more trouble than usual getting them into the boat. We'd get them within 10-15 feet of the boat and they'd throw the hook. We did manage to boat a few nice ones, and they tasted delicious while camping.

The planter rainbows are super active. They could be found throughout the water column -- even down in the 40-50 ft Kokanee range, and would often take a dodger/squid combo on the drop or while trolling. If we didn't have a solid bite for 20-30 minutes, we'd check the lines to see if we were relocating a planter.

I threw the Water Wolf on the line for a while during a dry spell where we could see fish on the finder, and sure enough, they were there. We just couldn't get them interested enough to aggressively bite. Turns out the dodger was rolling over some of the time, probably due to the bend I had in it.

tks for your footage this time and in the past also....I think we trollers all appreciate it, and can only imagine that maybe we have fish actively checking out our offerings like you're showing.....when you show fish interested like that, are you then trying anything else to encourage a strike?...Like your "S" turns, or maybe pinging your line, or raising or lowering your ball a little?

Sure like these videos l. I might need to purchase one of those some day soon. I would guess it would do good in other lakes like bear lake and flaming George dought it would be much good in Willard bay or utah lake... C
an it broadcast a live feed to the boat???

looks like you have a rubber snubber I would get rid of that

you may have been going to fast
your speed depends on the kind of dodger you use and the bend you put in a sling blade.
I like speeds from 1.3 to 1.7 at strawberry using a sling blade.
Dakota dodger speed less than 1.5 mph

sometimes a big bend in the dodger will turn it in to a flasher and catch fish

that is why you should change the bend in the dodger when you ane not catching fish
looks like you have a rubber snubber I would get rid of that
[#800000]Amen to getting rid of that snubber. Using ultra lite kokanee rods are a MUCH better approach. Excellent rod choices are available starting at $50. And thanks for sharing the video.[/#800000]

[#800000]Its interesting to watch these videos that show fish approaching the lure, making a quick grab for it with mouth open - and totally missing it. I've seen this in countless videos. And I used to think no hits while trolling through schools (as seen on the sonar) were because fish weren't interested. But it may have meant they were poor aimers and were striking and just plain missing the mark as we see in videos.[/#800000]

Sounds like the results I had Sunday over on the Strawberry side. Few kokes, lost a few, few cuts in the slots, handful of tiny rainbows.

40-50' down is where we caught most of ours. 9 fish in the boat, lost a few more. IMO, not bad for being on the water for just 4 hours.

So I've got two down riggers, and have recently started stacking on both. That's a bit of a work out on a good fishing day. Those first two hours, I think I only managed to sit down for 5 minutes.

A bit annoying to have the bottom line get hit, for a 6" rainbow. Undecided

It is interesting to watch the trout! It appears it had more interest in the dodger than the squid. I often foul hook fish & seems like I get them in the bottom fins or the tail. I can see how that could happen if they strike the dodger in lieu of the squid.
