Planer boards/what i learned

Got my new planers boards last week,so i headed to the gorge on sunday to try them,and heres what i learned.
1-First of all i must be a slow learner ,because it took me longer then ten minutes.

2-It is possible to get your planer board to close to the shore,run it into the rocks ,and lose your lure.

3-Planer boards like a certain speed,to slow and they wont track right,to fast and they are just getting pulled along and they wont track right.

4-Planer boards dont like big popgear,i had to try this just to see what would happen.To much drag on the board,the front was out of the water and it didnt track very well.

5- Planer boards have their place,they aren't the end all be all,of the four fish i caught,two was off the planers,two was just from long lining with out the boards.All in all it was fun to experment with them ,and i do see where they will be handy to use when the conditions warrent them.
ok now for the fishing four nice fat rainbows fell prey to my wiley ways all were fat ,three were female,all were released to fight another day.
Water temps are about 37 degs,and the lake appears to be up from this time last year,and thats always good news.

What type of board did you get? I was thinking of getting some mini- boards for small lures and trout? Any feedback?

I have a couple of the mini planar boards and they work OK. They are great for trolling at anything less than 2mph, with very little in the way of waves. Big waves eat them up. If you troll slow for trout, then they work pretty good.

UtahPescador,they are the off-shore-OR 31 model,about 12 inches long,with out the trip flag,they are blaze orange in color.Good luck if you get some boards.

I use the sonar with the planer board at all times if going by the shoreline or in the shallows... here's something else, always keep in mind what kind of lure you are using, if it's a deep diver or a medium diver, keep a mental note of how many feet of line between the crankbait and the planer board. This way you watch the sonar so you don't get snagged.

Pop gear is well, too heavy for a planer board as you prolly learned. Also heavy bottom bouncers doesn't fare too well either. one and half to two ounces along with crawler harnesses works fine but again keep a mental note of how many feet of line and watch the sonar so to keep your bottom bouncer ticking instead of dragging.

Make sure you are using a very strong line. Keep your line tight and planer board right alongside your boat and you should do very well in speeds up to 3.5 mph (wiper's ideal speed).
