?? How do you tell the difference ??
#1
[black]I plan to try for some spawning Willard walleye this evening. And I would like to bring some walleye home for supper. But I would like to be a little selective and put the females back. Problem is, I have no clue how to tell a male from a female. Other than maybe the females are fatter or may be loosing eggs.[/black]

Also, anyone know what the limint on walleye is at Willard? I don't want to be taking 3 if the limit is only 2!

The easiest way for me to tell is the body shape. The females will be pretty full of eggs this time of year and pretty plump. The males will be a bit skinnier. Also, the majority of the fish you will catch this time of year will be the males if you are fishing up in the rocks. They usually come in earlier than the females and stake out a place and are pretty agressive. I don't think I have ever caught a female early in the year, although I have heard reports that some anglers do. They are usually quite a bit larger than the males also. If you catch one over a couple of pounds, it's probably a female. The limit is 6 but only one can be over 20 inches. Good luck.

PDS is right on the money, if you catch two walleyes that have the same length, the female will always be the one that is fatter. The female I caught a few weeks ago was 20 inches and a little over 3 lbs, it was a lot fatter than a male would have been of the same length, a male that length would weigh around 2 lbs. Good luck, I hope you do good.

it's easy to tell the difference. Just squeeze the fish. If eggs come shooting out, it's a female. If milt squirts out, it's a male.

[black]Thanks all ... I'll be out on the Willard rocks tonight for a while. Hope I get a chance to compare the two. But I am told that chances are low that I will even catch a female.[/black]
