Since I have been throwing flyies with an old St. Croix I received 17 years ago, and it finally broke. Its time for a new Fly Rod. I can't decide whether to go with a 4 or 5 weight rod. I have always heard to collect rods in one or the other, odd or even...meaning 4, 6, 8, 10 or 3, 5, 7, 9. Whats your opinion.

Sorry to hear your rod broke [blush] I own a 3 & 5 for trout fishing and a 8 & 10 for carp and salmon so not sure if I follow one or the other. [cool]

That is too bad. It was more than likely USA made too....bummer
I started off with evens - 2,4,6,8 and later filled in the gap.
I think the 5 weight is the most versitile for all I fish for, but maybe it is because I have some great 5 weights like the JWF, the F&F, and of course Bamboo.[cool]

[#008000]I don't know about the "even or odd" thing, but I have 3,4,5,6,7 weight rods and they pretty much cover every fish [/#008000][#008000]I want to fish for[/#008000][#008000] - from tiny trout and panfish to all the different bass species and carp.
I think what really should matter to you is this: Were you satisfied with your St. Croix and it's size (you fished it for 17 years) ?
If so, then perhaps you should get the same kind of thing - that is if you are still going to fish the same kinds of places and for the same kinds of fish.
If you want to change; are you planning to fish for larger fish or smaller fish ?
