I was riding a few guide trips this weekend up at Big South Fork and had a little leisure time Sat. evening. I found an old lew's stick and a reel along with a new bluegill colored pop-r and started fishing the pond located on the farm. It has matted pondweed around the edges and I had heard some great things about the fish in this pond. They were all true, most of the fish were in 1 ft of water and between the main weed bodies and the shore. It was absolutely crazy. The numbers were off the charts and most of the fish were in the 14 to 16 inch range, with several larger fish in the mix. It usually took longer to get them off, then land them, they were killing the pop-r. The strangest part of the evening happened after six casts, I jerked up to a pad bed ,killed the bait, gave it a little quiver. FISH ON!!!!!! I landed the fish only to discover it was a crappie. That is the oddest thing I have ever caught on top water and I have caught snapping turtles and snakes with them.
For the rest of the trip, weather was great, Rhododendron was blooming, horses were fast, and the living was easy.
