Hi guys,
I'm a 3rd year ski bum up at Alta originally from SE MN bluff country(brook,browns,rainbows, and tigers) I decided i needed to start fishing in this beautiful state. I got out to the provo a couple years ago,uninsperienced, didn't catch a thing but was gergous fishing. how is the provo in winter? is much hatching ? midges mabye? I herd they crank the stream flow down, does that force fish in to wintering holes ? please pm or respond here, thanks guys looking foward to a good ski season with some good fishing days too.[fishin]
PS anyone fish Little Cottonwood or big cottonwood ? I herd the fish are cautious

i cant remeber the date, but i think it was DEC 2008 that Fly Fishing Magaizine had a HUGE article on the middle provo during the winter... from what i remember reading, the fishing is great!!! i looked on their web site but couldent find it archived... i get my houseing stuff on friday and i can try to scan nd email you the article if you would like.... i would need a PM with your email addy... otherwise when it comes to miserable days during the winter this year you will find me on the provo!

if its the article that im thinking then it was feburary of 2008. i remember that one because it had some flys on there for dryfly fishing and i went and tried them out

20 and 22's? I am fishing 28's to 32's.
Key IS very small in the winter. But streamers still work.

Dang you must have really good eye sight and lots of patience. Tthose 32 are like tying on a sliver to your line [laugh]

I didn't say it was easy...LOL
They are not that hard to see on the water though, but allot of people fish a bigger one in front.
Plus I fish full flex, so what I don't see, I will definitely feel.
Doing a fly swap on another forum. A Micro swap. 12 flies and they will fit on a dime. Cheap postage[laugh]

Nice !!! If I didnt have such fat fingers Id give those 32's a try but so far 22 is small is I can go. You should post a pic Id love to see all those flies on a dime.

Wow those are awesome cant believe how small they are. Whats the wire for ? do you use the wire to pull tippet through the eye ?

Sadly no, not enough room to loop the wire to make a threader. The wire is to HOLD the fly till I get them shipped out...LOL
Believe it or not, those 20/20 magnetic threaders work with the 32's

Out of curiosity what type of "landing" percentage do you have with the smaller (32) hooks? Once they are hooked and are "on" for a while how many do you land?
I know that when I start using size 18 or smaller hooks I seem to have a lot of fish that just seem to "let go" . I can have good pressure on the line (fish) and an appropriate drag and the hook just seems to pull loose. I doubt that I land 1/3 of the fish that I have on for more than a few seconds. I can only imagine that with a 32 the landing % must go way down.

I would say 95%. Some take quite awhile and I think I sub consciously break them off so I don't exhaust them to death.
They can't really throw this hook as they really don't know it is still in there.
A good percentage IN hook ups because they inhale and really can't spit it back out due to the size.
I also use 6X on them but use a Surgeon's loop so the fly can still wiggle.

How big a loop do you tie for wiggle room? Also do you have a tutorial on how to tie these small flies on a size 32? I have never tied anything smaller than a 22.
