Fly Swap
#1
With all these nice flies being posted I think we should put together a fly swap. I have no idea ho w they work but if someone has done one before maybe they can set one up. I have a couple new flies Im working on and would love to have some new flies and some more variety in my box. Anybody else want to try this?

While I'd have to think up something worthy enough to hand out to all you other folks, I'd be in for a fly swap.

You put a maximum number on tiers.

You put a number of flies they each tie normally just 1 but I have seen as many as three flies each.

You put a deadline on mailing in their flies. Normally a month away give or take a week.

So everyone in on the swap sends you ten flies (just saying there are 10 tiers). When you get all ten peoples flies you take one from everyone elses box and put them in everyone elses box.

So a fellow sends you ten flies of a given pattern and you send him back ten flies, one from each of the other tiers in the swap. Easy peasey right?

Don't they usually pick some sort of theme? Suppose you can keep it free form. Watched a Carp Flies swap that was quite interesting. One target, but lots of variety.
How about ice-flies?

Maybe someday I'll learn to tie well enough to make 10 of one kind. I don't know that I could tie the same fly twice! [crazy]

Theme is a must, ex: Dries, Terrestrials, Streamers, etc. Ice flies is interesting.
Everyone involved picks ONE pattern. Then ties that one pattern times the number of people in the swap.
Now, as Troller mentioned, if 10 tiers, you CAN tie 10 flies, but actually only need to tie 9 unless you want one of your own back. OR, I request that tiers tie the number of people, in this case again, 10. Then put the ONE fly in a separate box. Save it incase someone doesn't receive theirs, or give it away in a contest.
Everyone that is participating needs to put some kind of toe tag with name of fly and tier, and include a self addressed return envelope. This is done at the post office. Before sealing you entry in the envelope, have it weighed and charged, then double that on the return envelope, put it in with flies and send.

This.

I'm not much of a tier unless it's a wooly bugger or san juan worm, but I'd love to give it a go. Count me in.

I have done hundreds of fly swaps, and no offense to anyone here as I have not seen your flies, but you can get a lot of garbage as well. I have a Mason Jar full of flies that just don't attract anything.

My suggestion for a theme. everyone tie your favorite fly that actually has caught fish.

Just a suggestion.

[#502800]Yes, An ice fly swap after Christmas could be interesting ........ Is an ice jig and an ice fly interchangeable, or does it have to be fluff and feathers?[/#502800]
