I know this is going to be very much a personal preference thing, but I have a buddy wanting to get a flasher and he wanted me to post up for opinions.
What functions besides what the very most basic flashers should he be looking for? I believe he would be okay spending the money to get a nicer flasher if the functions are worth the extra cash. I just have only used a flasher one time and I don't even remember what it was. So any suggestions or direction you can offer would be appreciated.

He really can't go wrong with either any of the Marcum or Vexilar models. His budget will dictate which one, but any of their flashers will do great.

if it were me I would go Marcum lx7 hands down.... I have fished with the humminbird 35 45 55 Marcum lx5 lx6 lx7 lx9 and vex fl8 but like you said it is all personal pref.... my choices in order would be lx7 lx9 lx6 the bird 55 the lx5 bird 45 35 and then any Marcum after that.... the vexs just didn't fit me.....

Bought a showdown troller just recently and I was the lucky guy too grab the last one from scheels and I've just fell in love with it. It might me a small screen unit but for $200 it's just amazing. Gotta love watching where the schools are then putting your jig in front of them or in the area then watching the fish diving up or down toward the jig.
Used on Utah lake 2 time and caught more fish then I usually did then 2 times at rockport and people were saying it was a slow day I'd call it a great day especially that I've just returned back into ice fishing since 10 years ago. Remember back as a kid I'd never caught anything till last year when the twins converted me into it.
The only real down fall for the show down that isn't a big deal that you cant read the fish from 0-4 ft but when you hit the 5 ft mark it's great. I'm not sure if that's how all other flashers. Make sure if you get a showdown turn off the light and ice mode if not you battery will die fast as well if you buy it make sure you get the $50 case so you can use a 12 V battery that will last longer for sure. I'd fish for 3 -5 trips straight on my old fish finder in a float tube on 10 hr day trips.

The biggest differences I've noticed in flashers are colors target separation (for large schools of small fish) and transducer range and cone angle. But it's just like everyone else said it's personal preference as to what is 'worth it'. For example if you are never going to fish in over 30 FOW then what good is a flasher that is good to 1000 feet?
