Mr Heater Portable Buddy troubleshooting

I was wondering if anyone has experience with Mr Heater's Portable Buddy. Bought one this season and was pleased with it the first couple of outings. However, the past two times I've been out with it, the flame with cut out on me after several hours of use. I have a hunch that this is a safety mechanism if the air isn't "fresh". Anyone have any experience or other thoughts? We weren't out of gas, igniter was sparking just fine.

The little green propane tanks freeze after extended use. You can keep two with you and rotate them when that happens.

I had the same issue with mine. Small green cans would freeze up. I switched over to a five gallon propane tank and it fixed the problems. A little more to haul but better than being cold!

You can buy a smaller 2 1/2 gallon tanks which are easier to manage in the sled as well!

I use one of those little pot belly propane tanks. They work well. Mine has a few years on it and it has been acting up some lately. Found some great info on You tube and Mr Heater has a troubleshooting list on their web site. [laugh]

They recommend a filter when running off a auxiliary tank for the moister that forms in the line, I believe.

I have had a couple of them. I agree with the others that the small tanks will freeze mine did today.
If you add a larger tank you have two options. Most hoses are rated for low pressure. The regular hoses will leak plasticizers into the fuel. Those Plasticizers will flow to the goose neck in the fuel line to the pilot light.

Option 1 a filter can be used. I have one but I didn't like it my self. It seemed like it didn't allow enough fuel through it. Maybe it was plugged by the Plasticizers?

Option 2 use a hose that is made to be used like this. Read up on it and see the one here.

If you have been using the wrong hose it will act like you are saying. Fuel won't go pass the goose neck. You can purge it by putting on a small tank and pushing the pilot button. Then rotating the heater to allow the fuel to push out the "oils"

Thanks for your feedback, everyone. We went out yesterday and used it, keeping it on a small plank of wood to keep it off the ice. That seemed to work, but it was also a warmer day yesterday than it was on the days we were having issues. I'm looking in to getting a larger propane tank + filter and we'll go from there. Forget the filter get a good hose.

You will get more bang for your buck buying the hose and a tank. The refill cost is a fraction of what you pay for small green tanks. I broke my unit down last night and cleaned it out and it is working fine again. Stay warm and fish on [laugh]
