Bear Lake Conditions and Fishing Report
#1
Updated Friday, February 27, 2004. Bear Lake is totally ice covered and the ice is approximately 16" thick and doesn't show any signs of melting. There is approximately 12" of snow around the shoreline and about 6" of snow (no slush) on top the ice. There have been snowmobiles and 4-wheelers on the ice, but please use caution since there are many springs in Bear Lake that can create thin spots and even open holes.

Ice fishing continues to remain good for whitefish and fair for cutthroat and lake trout. For whitefish try fishing right on top of the rockpile in about 30-35 feet of water or in weedbeds in 15-25 feet of water on southeast and southwest sides of the lake. Cisco Beach area has also been producing some good whitefish catches in 10-20 feet of water. Use 1/16 ounce or smaller jigs, teardrops or very small castmasters or Swedish pimples (about ½" to ¾" long) tipped with waxworms or salmon eggs jigged within 6" of bottom. The bite is very light so spring bobbers have been helpful. Finally use light line, 4-6lb test. It is easier to detect bites on these small lures with lighter line. Cutthroat trout and lake trout fishing has been spotty, but once the fish start biting you can have some great action. Anglers fishing directly east of Garden City or off the Utah State Park marina with 4" tube jigs or large spoons tipped with cisco landed several lake trout this week with one going 15lbs. Some really nice cutthroat trout are also being taken. Some other traditional spots to try are off 2nd Point, Val's Pump, Cisco Beach, and the rockpile. Most of the action for cutthroat and lake trout is coming from about 60 feet of water, however, with the water temperatures being the same around the lake at this time of year, fish can be found at any depth. In other words, if you are not having any action, try different depths.
