2004-141 IMPROVEMENTS MADE ON LAKE D'ARBONNE

[font "arial"]The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Inland Fisheries Division has partnered with the D'Arbonne Lake Commission to complete improvements on the waterbody. Six underwater artificial reef sites and two gravel beds have been successfully installed on the lake, with the goal of improving the fishery resource.

As the lake ages, the fishery habitat also ages. LDWF has instituted a program to help improve declining habitats through the use of underwater artificial reefs that attract multiple species of fish, and gravel beds for spawning. These elements provide improved fishing opportunities for anglers that frequent the lake.

"By using the artificial reefs and gravel beds, we are trying to improve the quality of the fishing experience for both bank fishermen and boat fishermen," said LDWF Inland Fisheries Biologist Supervisor Mike Wood. "These structures will also attract a wide variety of fish, so all types of anglers will benefit."

The D'Arbonne Lake Commission assisted the department with the placing of the reefs as well as funding for the program. Many of the materials for the project were donated by local businesses.

Maps of the reef locations will be available at various retail outlets throughout the area and on the LDWF website at www.wlf.state.la.us.
