Crayfish Festival

Exercise your appetite for fun at Arizona's crayfish festival Bring your appetite for fun and crayfish to the 2nd Annual Arizona Crayfish Festival starting at 10 a.m. on Aug. 15 at Willow Springs Lake off Highway 260 between Payson and Heber.

Learn how to catch, cook (Cajun style) and eat crayfish at this hands-on event, which is co-sponsored by "Rosie On the House" at KTAR 620 AM, Bob and Ann Hirsch of "A Word from the Wild" on ESPN 860 AM, and the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

"Bring the whole family. There's something for everyone from the kids to grandma," says Ann Hirsch.

Game and Fish Department wildlife experts explain that crayfish are not native to Arizona and are damaging rivers and streams - especially once pristine trout waters. "Please remember that it is not legal to transport live crayfish, except in a small area of southwestern Arizona along the Colorado River," says Rory Aikens, a Game and Fish spokesperson.

Aikens recommends placing harvested crayfish on ice if you aren't going to eat them right at the lake, river or stream where they are caught. "Placing crayfish or even live fish on ice right away is an excellent yet simple way to preserve your catch, while obeying regulations that prohibit the transport of live game fish or crustaceans."
