LAKE POWELL — By Wayne Gustaveson at wayneswords.com. (posted Sept. 1). Striper action has temporarily calmed down from Bullfrog to White Canyon. The most abundant shad/striper population resides in the upper reaches of Powell and perhaps there is too much to eat. Expect boils to start again with the waning moon. Bass fishing has improved lake wide for those using surface lures and shad imitating baits. If using plastic, try white tubes fished erratically in the shallows or flukes zipped along the surface. Shallow-running hard baits such as Rat-L-Traps and Shad Raps are working near points and reefs. From Bullfrog headed downstream, stripers are chasing shad with a vengeance.

LEES FERRY — According to Lees Ferry Anglers, most flies produced a little action, as the trout are eating vigorously, especially during the rising flows. Carry all the standards like zebra midges, San Juans, and scuds. The dry fly bite is slowing down. Fishing at the walk-In will only improve. Scuds and San Juans will work at this section. Also carry zebra midges so you can cover all your bases. As of late it hasn't been all too busy at this section and fish have been actively eating for those fortunate enough to spend a day there. This area is unique and extremely different than upriver fishing. Spin fishing upriver can be fun and very productive. By casting toward to bank with black Panther Martins and other small spinners like Rooster-Tails and Mepps one can lure unseen fish from shadows of boulders and underwater vegetation. Marabou jigs and KastMasters can work the deeper water when letting them sink then jigging them towards the surface. The top colors are black, olive, and brown. Glo-bugs are still effective as well when trailed by a San Juan worm or scuds. A family of anglers, parents and two youngsters, report drift fishing the Ferry using Panther Martin spinners for two days and catching and releasing 40 rainbow trout. “I was so busy taking fish off the hooks I could barely get my line in the water. It was the first time for both of my kids to catch fish completely on their own,” says the dad.

LAKE MEAD — No new reports. Striper fishing should be great at night under lights using anchovies or live shad. The new moon is approaching, so head out for some great action. The courtesy dock has been removed at South Cove due to low water, so expect tricky launching and mooring if you go.

LAKE MOHAVE — According to the local wildlife manager, anglers were doing well around the power lines and at Cabinsite Cove from shore. Most anglers were using anchovies and some were using worms. One angler reported using squid for stripers. He said the squid cost more, but lasted longer since the fish can't get it off the hook”.

WILLOW BEACH — No new reports. The local wildlife manager reports that fishing for rainbow trout is still outstanding, especially right after the stocking thru Sunday. Anglers are still catching limits. Success seems to be best just after sunrise until about 10 a.m. and for a few hours before sunset. Anglers are also catching trout throughout the day. Striped bass success was also good with one group catching 13 striped bass in about 30 minutes; all under 2 pounds. Others had just a few on their stringer. Power Bait is still the bait of choice for trout; rainbow, orange, yellow, white and even Captain America. Striped bass still like the anchovies.

TOPOCK MARSH — No new reports. A few largemouth bass are being taken on dark colored plastic lizards. Catfishing has been good on worms and chicken livers. Fishing for largemouth bass and catfish has pick up in the Catfish Paradise area.

COLORADO RIVER BELOW DAVIS DAM — No new reports. Striper fishing should be decent from boats drifting past Casino Row. Trout stocking is scheduled to resume in October.
