Since the end of September, the Urban Fishing Program has stocked over 16,000 catfish into urban lakes in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. Catfish have been arriving in great shape and are adapting to their new lake homes very quickly—providing anglers with some great, rod-bending action. Phoenix area urban lakes are scheduled for two more catfish stockings and urban lakes in Tucson will receive one more catfish stocking before the deliveries change over to trout. We are right on target, with falling lake temperatures, to stock rainbow trout into urban lakes in both the Tucson and Phoenix areas the week of November 15-20. With the colder temperatures at Payson’s Green Valley Lakes, trout stockings already started on Wednesday, October 13 and will continue at three-week intervals into May.
CHAPARRAL LAKE RESTORATION WILL REQUIRE LAKE CLOSURE
The City of Scottsdale and the Arizona Game and Fish Department are planning on making a number of improvements to Chaparral Lake from November 2004 to March 2005. The primary project goal is to stop water leakage and shoreline erosion at this popular, 10-acre urban lake. The City will be installing a new liner along the lake edge and adding vertical concrete walls around the entire lake and island perimeter. The new design will increase the current normal lake depth about 16 inches. By the end of November, the City will fence the entire perimeter of the lake closing it off to fishing and public access during the 100+ day construction period. During construction, the lake level will be lowered five feet, leaving plenty of water behind to support all the fish found in the lake. No fish stockings will occur at Chaparral during this closure period. Instead, the Arizona Game and Fish Department will be using the Chaparral fish stocking funds to purchase over 500 tons of rock materials to be used to create rock reefs in the lake shallows. The rock reefs will include rock material ranging from 1-24 inches in size and will be placed strategically to increase fish spawning and growth. Also included in the project are improvements for stocking truck access on the south end and a handicap accessible area on the north end.
LOOKING FOR RECORD BIG FISH
If you are lucky enough to catch a big fish from an urban lake, or any Arizona water, don’t miss out on a chance to turn it in for a new state, urban or Big Fish-of-the-Year record. Big fish record forms and procedures for applying are found in the Urban Fishing Program brochure or the AZ Fishing Regulations booklet. With only two more months to go in 2004, here are the current Urban records: Channel catfish 10.5 pounds, rainbow trout 2.3 pounds, common carp 15.1 pounds, and white amur 32.9 pounds. Two catch and release records have been submitted including a 10 inch hybrid sunfish and an 11 inch redear sunfish. Annual winners of the record fish program receive certificates, prizes and recognition in the annual regulations and on the Department web site. There are some common fish species without any urban record submittals so far including largemouth bass, bluegill and yellow bass. Anglers can submit urban fish records for the kept category (length and legal weight) or the catch and release category (length only).
URBAN FISHING REPORT
Fishing for channel catfish is good at all Urban lakes. Catfish are biting on stink baits, shrimp and chicken liver on the bottom. Try fishing early mornings or evenings for the best bite by these 16-20 inch catfish. Fishing for bass and sunfish has been good this time of year as fish move into shallows in the early morning. Fishing at Green Valley lakes (Payson) is good to excellent for anglers using Power Bait or small spinners on light (2-6 lb.) line. [#ffffff]Lakes[/#ffffff] [#ffffff]Last Stocking[/#ffffff] [#ffffff]Week of Next Stocking[/#ffffff] Phoenix Area Lakes October 15 (catfish) October 25-30 (catfish) Tucson Lakes October 23 (catfish) November 1-6 (catfish) Green Valley Lakes (Payson) October 13 (trout) November 1-6 (trout) The Arizona Game and Fish Department prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, disability in its programs and activities.
