URBAN FISHING PROGRAM PUMPS $150,000 BACK INTO PARKS
#1
The Urban Fishing Program (Program) was successful in obtaining $150,000 in Heritage funds to be used for urban lake fishing improvements. This special opportunity will allow the Arizona Game and Fish Department to provide funding for much needed improvements and enhancements at all 20 of the Program waters. Over the past few months, Eric Swanson, Program manger, has been working closely with park managers to identify projects that would improve or enhance the fishery, the water quality, or access and comfort for anglers at each Program lake. Fish habitat projects using hundreds of tons of rock for fish reefs and spawning beds have already been completed at Kiwanis and Chaparral Lakes. New Urban Fishing signs are now posted at Papago Ponds and Steele Indian School Park.
Upcoming projects over the next few months include: new Urban Fishing signs and a Fishing Information Station (kiosk) at all 20 lakes; a new, custom designed aeration system at 25-acre Alvord Lake; new shoreline stabilization and angler access at Papago Ponds #1 and #3 and Canal Pond; new rock and gravel habitat installed into six lakes; new sidewalks and improved angler access at Encanto and Cortez Parks; fish stocking access improvements at two parks; and new shade trees planted along the lake edge at eight parks. The Heritage Funds used for these projects come from funds generated by the Arizona Lottery and transferred annually to the Arizona Game and Fish Department for enhancements to urban wildlife and fish resources and associated recreation.
