Bear Lake Report/Update

Fishing Report for Bear Lake

The surface water temperature at Bear Lake is 69 degrees. The warm surface water has driven the fish (cutthroat trout and lake trout) deeper but they are still able to be caught and the fishing is being reported as 'fair' by those targeting fish and not recreating. The best luck for cutthroat trout is coming off the east side of the lake in the area of the scout camp north to North Eden. The best luck is being had by anglers who are trolling with downriggers in about 65-85 feet of water with the lure running close to the bottom. Lures of choice include rattling minnow type lures or crankbaits. Flatfish have also been producing a few fish. Color does not really seem to matter when the fish are at these depths, but favorites are white, silver, blue and green. Lake trout are also occasionally being taken using the same methods as for cutthroat.

Also, trolling during the early mornings off the North and South Eden deltas with small green, rapalas have been working for cutthroat trout that are feeding on insects that get blown out onto the lake surface by morning canyon breezes. Best action is from right before first light until about 9 am. Consider using side planers in the shallower waters to help to get the lure away from the boat. Although this method is not very popular on Bear Lake it can be very effective.

The lake level has remained relatively stable (it has dropped only 4 inches from the high mark in June) so boats can still be launched at the Utah State Park Marina, First Point ramp, or Rainbow Cove ramp. Finally, for those anglers without boats, try shore fishing off Cisco Beach where you can easily cast to deeper water. Try early mornings or evenings and cast spoons or deep diving crankbaits to deep water and retrieve them so the lure is close to, or bumping the bottom.
