Sevier's Black Canyon Fishable Through Winter
#1
Feb. 21, 2008 - Ice fishing is a great way to catch big fish in the winter, but not very practical if you only own a fly rod. Indeed, if you have to get your fly fishing fix on, you're have to target open waters like the East Fork Sevier's Black Canyon.

"You can find good winter fishing on the Sevier in Black Canyon all winter because it doesn't freeze like the stretch in Kingston Canyon," tips Mike Hadley, DWR biologist. "Obviously, trout get sluggish during the winter, but fishing can be very productive throughout the colder months.

"The best way to connect with the Sevier's trout is to fish streamers and nymphs and put them through the obvious seams and pools time and again until the fish get agitated and hit the offerings out of aggression. When you do get them to hit, you can count on your average fish running 12 to 15 inches with a quality fish running 20 inches in the canyon.

"The only challenge here will be access because the road could be unplowed or you might have to hike through some snow to get down to the water," says Hadley. "A good time to fish this stretch would be late morning through the afternoon hours where the sun might warm the water a degree or two, making the fish a bit more active."

Hadley adds that even when the weather is nice, the canyon receives little angling pressure.
