Help keep Quagga and zebras mussels out of Utah
#1
If you have fished or boated in the lower Colorado River areas of Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Lake Havasu or waters within the Mississippi River drainage, including the St. Lawrence Seaway or the Great Lakes (http://www.100thmeridian.org/), please help us KILL Quagga Mussels or Zebra Mussels that might be attached to your equipment.

Before you launch in Utah, make sure your boat & trailer and anchor or tie-off ropes have been thoroughly cleaned in very hot water (140° F recommended) and dried (for a minimum of five days).

Additionally, water holding areas such as water circulation systems, bilge areas, live wells or ballast tanks need to be sterilized with 200 ppm potassium chloride before launching. (Note: Potassium chloride (KCl) solutions in concentrations of 200 ppm will not harm the aquatic environment and can be made by thoroughly mixing one teaspoon of dry KCL salt crystals into two gallons of water. KCl salt crystals are available at stores such as Lowes, Home Depot or other water softener suppliers.

Nobody wants Quagga Mussels or Zebra Mussels or other aquatic nuisance species (hitchhikers) introduced into Utah. They can harm your boat's engine cooling system, devastate your fisheries and ruin water-based recreation areas.

For more information on quagga and zebra mussels see wildlife.utah.gov/news/07-03/quagga.php.
