lake powell help
#1
leaving for lake powell tomorrow night should be there early thursday staying til saturday. This will be my first time going to Powell and I could use some help fishing it. I fish for large and smallmouth a lot down here so I kind of have an idea how to fish for them down there but can anyone help with the Stripers and maybe some Walleye if they are catchable right now? We are launching from Wahweap I think and finding a cove from there to camp in I will have access to a boat but will mostly be shore fishing any tips for catching fish from the shore like what lures or bait to use would be awesome thanks in advance..

Chum anchovies at night. In the bays, or even off the docks. I usually cut them in half and put a 1/4 oz glow in the dark jig head and hook the anchovy through the skull where ever you can make sure it will stay on the hook. Usually through the mouth and right up through the brain. Then with the other half of the Anchovy I will cut into 3 pieces and use it as chum. Throw out the chum and let it settle a second then I usually throw out one of the setups with the jig head and anchovy and let it drop to the bottom of the lake right in the area that you throw the cut chum out. then it is kinda a waiting game for the stripers to move in. Just drag the bait off the bottom not moving it very much at all because if you do you will shake off your bait. Just slowly drag it maybe an inch every 2 or 3 min. I have caught stringers of stripers this way right off the docks at night in both bullfrog and wahweap. You will also catch a bunch of catfish on "accident" but they are pretty fun to catch and some of them get BIG. I have caught an 8 pound catfish and I know there are bigger ones. I have also caught a striper that was 26 1/2 inches and went about 7 pounds. Bringing it in the dark with all the flashlight reflections was awesome it felt like I was fishing in the ocean. Caught the striper at night anchored off in a bay off a boat but I have done just as well camping in a cove and fishing from shore. In the day cruise around and look for boils and I usually stay far away from them so I dont spook the school. Then I use a good sized silver kastmaster. You have enough weight to cast it from a distance and its action dropping in right in front of the boil. It looks like a dying shad that would be an easy meal. Thats what the stripers are looking for and easy meal that they dont have to put too much energy towards. You can also chum in the day but you have to find the fish with electronics]. @ night they are cruising all over the lake. Hope this helps.

Fish early and late with zara spooks for some good topwater action. Pop R's can be good to. A fluke worked fast on top can also catch some nice fish. Largemouth tend to hang around the narrow coves. Smallmouth around any chunk rock or points that drop into deeper water. Basic bass tackle works fine. Plastics, cranks, and spinnerbaits. The stripers should be boiling. Topwater and spoons are great to throw into a boil.

I went out about a 3 weeks ago and the fishing was tough. We fished the bullfrog area. The water was rising fast and the fish were hard to find. I hope your trip works out better than mine.
