TubeBabe's bad day
#1
[#0000ff][cool]Got an early start to Lindon (Utah Lake). Suited up in waders since water temps have dropped a bit again. Got the tubes aired up, motored up, geared up and ready to rumble shortly after 6. But when I was helping TubeBabe get launched I noticed her tube was a bit soft. Sometimes shrinks a bit in cold early temps and a quick shot with the pump firms it back up. But when I had made about three strokes on the double action pump I noticed some bubbles coming out from under the front corner of her tube. Not good. Even worse was that I had left the fast patch repair kit on my desk at home.

I said all the "appropriate" words to reflect the anger and gravity of the situation. TubeBabe is a trooper though and quickly agreed to fishing from shore while I went afloat...in my non-leaking craft.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]After some further delay...having to tear down the leaking tube and stow all her gear...I got launched a bit before 7 and headed for the harbor entrance. Water temp 59. A bit chilly to find shoreline whities in the midst of whoopie action. Probably pushed them out to deeper water...I thought. So I headed south for the bubbleup instead of north to the mouth of Battle Creek.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I did not stop to fish inside the harbor or around the points of the channel. Boogied (as much as possible with an electric motor) to the bubbleup and started watching TV (sonar). Very few blips. Fish few and scattered. Maybe I didn't figger right. But then I found a couple of small pockets of fish and began to get bit. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]All whitie action. And the bites were wierd. Some were so soft you had to just guess there was a fish there. Others were a series of taps followed by weight on the line...time to strike. Still others smashed those little jigs like they were trying to break them off the line and swim away with them. I missed a lot of hits and lost a lot of fish on the way to the tube. But, I was also adding a few nice whities to my basket.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As per our PM plan, TroutBumDave drove up and launched...arriving a few minutes after I had started my "speed run" to the bubbleup. He finally caught up to me at the buoys after I had the whities dialed in pretty well. I handed off some magic jigs and made some suggestions for where and how to work them. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There was a pesky little chop on the water that threatened to get worse...but never really did. But it was enough that we had to stay a ways apart to keep from "interacting". I caught a few more and Dave caught a few...including at least one nice cat that he admitted to.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]When we were far enough apart so that I did not have to worry about tangling I fished a minnow on my second rod. After a couple of pop and drops I set the hook into something with shoulders. A couple of long hard runs and some heavy slugging. Peeled line off against a stout drag several times. Finally blew some bubbles, came up and crawled in my (too small) net. 29" and 9.5#. Took a couple of pics and sent her back to make some kittyettes.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In between lots more white bass I also caught a yellow perch...and another feisty catfish. The second cat was a two footer. Fought good. Released that one too. A couple more pop and drops and that was it for the bait rod.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Ended up keeping about 25 or 30 white bass. Not sure how Dave finished. He was still at it when I cruised back in to collect TubeBabe just before noon. She had actually caught some white bass from shore...casting out into deeper water off the outside bank of the dike. Nothing next to shore.[/#0000ff]

TubeBabe is a good sport. I would have tripped you and grabbed your tube!! [laugh][laugh][laugh]

Nice fish especially considering the unsettled spring weather we've been having.
