Have a few more months before my new kayak arrives. Might as well take the old kayak out. Started off tossing a buzz bait at first light to no avail. Threw a small jig with my second rod targeting perch and started getting bites right away but they were difficult to hook. Moved around a bit and ended up catching perch, crappie , bluegill, smallies, and largies. Most of the fish I caught were dinks, but there were a few decent perch mixed in. I caught quite a few crappie but those were too small to keep so those went back.
The bite slowed down so I decided to take a ride. Never fished open water at Newton before so I tried to get a lay of the land. Ended up getting into another school of crappie but once again, they were all small. Decided to call it a day and head back. Might as well troll on the way in. Bingo, musky on!
I thought I got caught up in the weeds when my pole bent over. But once I took it out of the rod holder I felt the head shake. Although I was prepared for a musky, it sure is not easy landing one all by yourself in a kayak. Used my lip gripper and boy that fish did not like that but I got er done. Also, it is not easy to take a picture of a musky by your lonesome. Glad I had the camera all set up and ready. Even when I leaned all the way back, I had a hard time getting the entire fish in the picture.

I was looking at all the new Hobie fishing kayaks at the outdoor retailer show last week. They are freakin cool, but I didn't dare ask what any of them cost.
They have a motor mount option that folds up automatically so you don't have to worry about running the prop aground in shallow water. Using the propulsion pedals to steer.
Show us some pics of your new craft when you get it!

Smallies in Newton?? I wasn't aware of that. I know a lot of the largies can resemble them, but I am ignorant to smallies being in Newton.

But regardless of smallies or not, nice job on the muskie! I have been out there quite a bit over the last month and a half. I haven't seen too many caught. I haven't landed one yet this year - haven't even gotten a bite. But I have had them make me jump as they followed my lure right up to my little boat and splash as I wasn't paying attention. It will be interesting to see how much lower the water level gets out there this year.

Most of the bass I caught were largemouths, but not all of them. They were big enough to tell the difference with the corner of the mouth, but I also could be wrong.
I saw another boat lose a musky at the boat and they said it was a huge one. There was another boat with a couple of guys I talked to after fishing. They said the same guys that lost one at the boat saw line moving in the water and when they grabbed the line a musky was attached. They brought it in and I saw a picture of it and it looked to be in the upper 30s to lower 40s (I am not good at estimating length of muskies, I had to tape mine). They also told me that a guy hooked up with a musky and got spooled recently using heavy line and they said it was the same fish (I didn't get all of the details so not sure how they new).
Like I told the other two guys after fishing, I caught the musky out of pure luck (right place right time).

Tell me about it! I was out there Saturday for 4-5 hours. Had one almost knock me out of my little boat. I was fishing for bass with a plastic worm. I was about 20 yards off the bank casting right on the bank and jigging the worm back out. I would work it for about 10 yards off the bank, and then reel it back in the rest of the way, and do it over. On one of the quick retrieves, I wasn't paying attention until my worm was almost out of the water. A muskie, about 32-34 inches, just darted out of nowhere after it. I saw its mouth open and close as it broke the water right as I lifted my worm out. I about fell over backwards, then had to laugh at myself.
I did see a guy land one from the shore. He was using a crankbait. He said he had never been up there, nor had he ever caught one. Right place, right time.
I did have fun catching a lot of largies. They are loving the plastics right now.

+1. You can also add green sunfish to that list. They are in there. We caught a few through the ice last year, and we have caught a few this year with crawlers. But yeah, I haven't seen any trout, catfish, or smallies out of there, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. I was chatting with a local guy a couple of years ago, and he said they used to have trout and catfish in there, but don't anymore. But you just never know. Either way, it is fun to see how many species you can catch. One day out there, we caught crappie, bluegill, perch, largemouth bass, green sunfish, and lost a muskie.

I am heading up to newton tomorrow for the first time but seeing how I've never fished there I have no idea where to fish, anyone have any tips or good spots they are willing to share?

Off the points are usually good spots. The water is way lower than it ever got last year. You can pretty much walk to anywhere you want on the bank and fish. The last few times I have been out there, I have been seeing more tigers hanging out. I have been catching lots of largemouth on plastics anywhere there is grass on the bank and into the water. I have seen lots of tigers just hanging out within 10 yards of the shore in these areas. But I have also seen them surfacing where the water is deeper. Good luck! Hope you get one. You won't have to worry about any big ski boats. If you launch, just stay to the east of the ramp. You will see where I am talking about. Drops off pretty quickly, but you should be just fine. I will be looking to see how you do!

Awesome, thanks for the info! We will be launching, but my boat is just a 15ft smokercraft so it shouldn't be too bad. Im hoping to get a tiger or two but if all else fails we will just chase some bass around. I'll let you guys know how I do!

You will be fine launching. When the water is this low, taking out is the more difficult task. But with smaller boats, it's not too much of an issue.

Biggest I have caught pushed 16 inches. Last year I caught a couple 4 pounders out of there. Most of the ones this year have been averaging 10-12 inches. I have managed about half a dozen over 12, but nothing I consider big yet.

I think it was some 9 years ago - the water got waaaay low - so I've heard. Led to a big die off. If I remember right - the Musky came after.
I've not heard of any bows, or cats left in them waters. And I've not run into smallies.
Could do without the bows, but would be nice if they planted some Channels. I heard they used to get danged big in there.
Sorry I missed you today. Glad you got into 'em good. I just had to venture further northward - but I'll be sure to get some Perch-Stalking in this fall. Now it's low enough!
Nice going on the Musky. Did you hold the camera with your feet?
