I have had a boat for only 2 years now. I have aquired a trolling motor, good fish finder, trolling poles w lead core. Trying to prolong down riggers one more year. Is is uncouth to put a banana weight before the leader. If no, how much more depth would I gain. I have learned a lot reading from all of you. Thanks for that, it has been mentioned a lot the last few weeks that for the most part you are all good at giving very good info. Thanks for that.

Lead cores are good but limited on depth and accuracy of that depth. I picked up some divers to use until I got my downriggers and the jet divers worked the best for me. different size for each depth 10,20,30,40. you can still fight the fish unlike heavy weights.

How deep are you trying to get to? What are you fishing for and where? I would recommend buying used downriggers. You can generally find them on KSL for around $50.00's I run two down riggers and one lead line pole (out 7 colors three weeks ago worked at the gorge).
I have no guess as to what adding a weight would do to lead line. I do however use snap weights frequently with monofilament. It works well.

Depending on your speed, 1 color of lead line ( 10 yds) will get you down approx 3 ft, at 1.5-2mph, which is fast. Problem with putting that banana weight infront of the leader is that you limit the length of the leader. Use a long leader, 25-50 ft, on the end of your leadcore. Strip out 6-8 inches of lead and slide a 18-24 inch lenght of 30-40lb mono inside the dacron. An overhand knot at each end of the mono inside the dacron will secure the mono. You can put a loop in the end of the mono and attach your leader to the loop. It will all slide through the guides of your rod, allowing you to use as long a leader as you want. Now, the newer leadcore's, like Suffix use dynema as the outer covering of the lead, smaller diameter and stronger, like your braided lines. Smaller diameter means less resistance in the water and more depth. Don't know the characteristics for it. But you can be pretty precise with your depth if you know your speed and length of leadcore out.
I don't use a big trolling rig with my leadcore. I have Garcia 6500 reels with 100yds of Power Pro 20lb braid on the spool. I have taken a 100 yd spool of lead core and cut it into 1 color, 2 colors, 3 colors, and 4 colors, all which will fit on the reel on top of the Power Pro. I then use a 50ft leader of 12lb flurocarbon leader from the lead core to the lure. I very seldom go over 30 ft. deep so the set up is just fine. I can add snap weights if I do need more depth. I use this for pulling Shad Raps, Thunderstick Jr's, Rapala', flatfish, etc for walleye around here and bigger Rapala's for stripers at Powell.

I have been mostly at the berry. Once at the George. Have done well (for me) I thought. Use mostly dodgers and a squid or triple teaser, I just hear everyone talking about getting 40 to 60 foot down for kokes latter in the summer. My boat is a ski boat and the sides are only 4" wide most of the down rigger bases are 5. I don't want to make my boat fishing only, I have to be able to take wife and kids playing. What about the bases that have a shaft and slide down threw the side. ?? I troll 1.3 to 1.6 even I have noticed the bite stop much faster than that.

I troll 1.8 -2.2 GPS speed and hammer the Kokes from Spring until season close. Do you have rod holders? If so you could use a gimble mount. It may break your rod holders, fair warning. They still work, just kind of break up the bottom a little.

I used to use lead core and banana weights when we pulling large pop gear a 5oz. weight with 3 to 4 colors out would get me down about 30 to 40 feet.
