UDWR Bear Lake Fishing Report:

There is about 10” of snow on the ground at Bear Lake and all ramps are available for launching boats. Deicers are being used to keep the marina open. You can launch at First Point, Cisco Beach and Rainbow Cove boat ramps, however the State Park has pulled the courtesy docks at all locations except the State Park marina. If you are launching in these east side locations come prepared to launch without a dock. The water level at Rainbow Cove is becoming low, so if you are launching a larger boat, be careful about not backing in your trailer so far that it will go off the end of the concrete ramp. There is a large drop off at the end of the ramp and could ruin a trailer axle. There are also a fair amount of floating ice on the lake, so be careful when boating. The ramps have been plowed, but you should have a 4 wheel drive and some salt just in case. Fishing for Lake Trout and Cutthroat Trout has been very good for anglers both jigging and trolling off the rockpile area. If jigging use tube jigs tipped with cisco or sucker meat. If trolling with downriggers in these same locations, use Rapalas or minnow type lures including spoons. Try off the rockpile near Ideal Beach, the rockpiles just north of the Utah State Park marina, and off South Eden/Cisco Beach in water depths of 35-70’ of water. Anglers are also catching a few fish casting off shore at Cisco Beach and off the State Park marina dikes. Try larger spoons or large spinners (#5 or #6) at this time of year.

Please remember, all Cutthroat Trout that are caught and don’t have a healed fin clip must be released. Large Lake Trout are not very good eating and take a long time to reach large sizes, and while they are legal to keep, many anglers are encouraging other anglers to release them.

Garden City Community Fishery Pond

The pond is now frozen and ice thickness is 6-7”. We urge anglers to be extremely cautious since there are two deicers on the pond which makes the ice weak on those areas. They are clearly marked with black plastic floats. The best luck is coming on very small jigs (1/32 oz or smaller) ice flies in green or orange colors. Tip your lure with a Gulp maggot or small waxworm for best results.

Laketown Reservoir

Laketown Reservoir is also frozen and the ice is 8-10”” thick at this time. Access is becoming difficult with increasing snow depths, but as of January 2nd , you can still access the reservoir in a 4 wheel drive. One the road is snowed-in you can only access this water with a snowmobile or on skiis. Fishing has been good for rainbow and a few cutthroat trout using ice flies tipped with a meal worm or nightcrawler.

Thanks Scott. Was going to fish it today, but the weather scared me off. Keeping the snow off of the boat and hoping still to get up there again soon.

You could singlehandedly end Utah's drought just by saying publicly you want to go fishing at Bear lake in your boat.

Today was the third time you wanted to go up there this fall/winter and each time we had a major storm. [shocked]
