Maryland “Clean Marinas” of the Year

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has selected the State’s cleanest, greenest most eco-friendly marinas and boatyards of 2012, naming four establishments Maryland Clean Marina of the Year based on their size and services. The winners are:
Small Marina: Paradise Marina, Deale
Small Boatyard: Rockhold Creek Marina, Deale
Large Marina: Baltimore Marine Center Lighthouse Point, Baltimore
Large Boatyard: Tidewater Yacht Service Center, Baltimore
“These are model businesses and leaders in their field. In addition to having attained the Clean Marina Award, they are clearly recognized by their customers and fellow citizens for their efforts to protect our waterways,” said DNR Secretary John Griffin.
Boaters, marina owners and watershed associations sent in their nominations and DNR’s Clean Marina Program chose the winners based on their demonstrated excellence in the overall cleanliness of their facilities, the environmental services offered, and their work in communicating and enforcing clean marina rules and practices.
“Having worked with these small businesses when they first earned the Clean Marina Award, I can attest that they are passionate about protecting our waterways. Congratulations to all the winners!” said Clean Marina Program Manager Donna Morrow.
Prizes were generously donated by Marine Equipment and Supply Company, Schooner Woodwind Sailing Cruises, and EMP/Elias Environmental. DNR will honor the winners on January 23, 2013 at a Clean Marina Workshop at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center in Annapolis. This marks the second Maryland Clean Marina of the Year contest, Herrington Harbour in Deale won for 2011.
The Maryland Clean Marina initiative recognizes and promotes marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs that meet legal requirements and voluntarily adopt pollution prevention practices. DNR has certified nearly 25 percent of Maryland’s estimated 600 marinas as Clean Marinas or Clean Marina Partners. All marinas and boatyards are encouraged to participate.
