Utah Offers Prizes for Tagged Fish

Regional Fishing, United States Fishing Articles, Utah Fishing Articles |

Tagged fish contests are happening, or will happen soon, at four lakes and ponds in northeastern Utah. The waters are:

Little Montes Creek in Uintah County, Moose Pond in Daggett County and the Lower Stillwater Ponds in Duchesne County. The Fox Family Fun Fishing Event will happen at all three waters.

Starvation Reservoir. Starvation is one of the waters in the country where Cabela’s Fish for Millions contest is being held.
Family Fun Fishing Event

Trina Hedrick, regional aquatic manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, says about 500 rainbow trout at the Whiterocks State Fish Hatchery will be tagged for the Family Fun Fishing Event.

“Whiterocks will hold the fish,” she says, “and personnel will distribute them during their normal stocking runs.”

If you catch a fish with a tag from Little Montes Creek, Lower Stillwater Ponds or the Moose Pond, you can bring the tag to one of the sites advertised by Fox Radio and its sister stations, or to the UDWR office in Vernal.

Hedrick says event organizers chose three smaller ponds for this year’s contest to try to make it easier for people to catch a tagged fish.

“The Family Fun event started May 25 and goes until Aug. 16,” Hedrick says. “At the end of the contest, folks who caught tagged fish are invited to attend the finale of a local event – Alive After Five – which will be held in Vernal. Names will be drawn and about $3,000 in prizes will be given away.”

Most of the prizes will be provided through donations collected by the Fox radio station.

Hedrick says there’s no age limit to participate in the fishing contest, so anyone can join in on the fun. “We [the radio stations and other sponsors] feel fishing is a great family activity,” she says. “Participating in the Family Fun Fishing Event is a good way to bring a little extra excitement to your next outing.”

Fish for Millions contest

The Fish for Millions contest is a national contest sponsored by Cabelas. To participate, you must preregister at cabelas.com/fishformillions.

“We’re excited Cabelas chose Starvation as one of their national waters,” Hedrick says. “It just goes to show how good the fisheries are in the Uinta Basin.”
