I'm sure this has been discussed several times but I can't find any posts. I have 4 trolling poles 2 with lead core. 2 with 8 lb fluorocarbon for my down rigger. Is it personal preference on using mono or fluoro. I fish for kokes and trout just don't know about stretch or drag on the water.

I don't use flouro or mono on any rods any longer, except for leader material. My trolling rods, for Kokes, Lakers and Cutthroat are spooled up with 30lb braid then I used an improved albright knot to attach a 6' piece of flourocarbon leader material. I use 10 lb for Koke fishing and 15 lb for laker/cutthroat fishing. I don't have data, but I'm 100% sure my hook up:landing ratio improved for all species using the superlines. The superlines last longer than flouro/mono and are much thinner diameter than corresponding flouro/mono. I have not had any problem keeping the superlines in my downrigger releases either. Something to consider. Oh, and I still keep two rods spooled up with lead core too, but I only use them occasionally.

There's a lot of room for personal preference here....the main thing (esp. for Kokes) is that you want some 'give' in your set up, as their mouth cartilage is softer than some other species....this can be accomplished with special kokanee rods ( plenty of tip bend), bungee snubbers (reduces the shock of a hard hit), or the line itself, if you're using a line with some give......My mainline is 12 lb mono (lots of quality brands out there) and like BLFG, I also use 10 lb fluorocarbon for my 6' leader......this works well for me at Strawberry, Flaming Gorge, or our other local reservoirs.....If I was trolling for larger macs, I would certainly beef up my gear.....Guluk.....

I like braided line, have it on some other poles. I was worried that braided would brag in the water worse and put a big arch in my line. But I have been wrong before. Thanks for the help.

I like P line 15 lb fluorocarbon for my leader I have some set up that has got close to 40 kokes on with out breaking

I've pretty much gone with braids and a more flexible pole for everything, I like the high vis whenever I'm running a side planer, it helps to see how far the release is out on the side planer line, I run about 15 feet of mono leader.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]I have tied braided on my DR rods and do NOT like it at all. Big problem with it and the OffShore releases I prefer to use. So mono it is for me. I think most cost concious folks will spool with regular mono and tip with 6 feet or more of florocarbon. I use the high viz (yellow in my case) line so these tired old eyes can see the line against the water.
I do use braided line on my 2 bass fishing combos and of course tip them with florocarbon as well.
Florocarbon is more expensive than regular mono and the only thing it does better than regular mono is hide - fish can't see it. So you really waste money by filling your spool with it instead of just using it just where it does its thing.

I use 17lb lead core on 2 koke rods with about 30 feet of 12lb fluoro, 2 downrigger rods for macs that have 15lb mono with a 14lb fluoro leader, 1 downrigger rod for kokes that has 15lb mono with 12lb fluoro leader, and 2 jigging rods spooled with 15lb braid and 14lb fluoro leader. I tried using braid on my 2 downrigger rods for macs 2 years ago and hated it, not enough stretch and too easy to tangle.
