I got off work at around 2am last night and had a crazy idea, try Starvation at night. Turns out I may not be as crazy as my Wife tells me.

Little fish fanatic and I launched from Rabbit Gulch campground around 3:15am and slowly worked jigs with our favorite curly tail (purple and orange) tipped with a crawler around the island. We had steady action until around 5 am until I noticed one spot that everytime we drifted over we always picked up a fish or two. At this point we would just drift over this very distinct hump from 13 fow to 20 fow over and over and we killed them. We both caught our limit of Walleye plus an occasional smallie.

Having just recently been Starvy trained and certified by my fellow BFTers(Thank you) I just may get a little cocky and full of it (you know what of). But then I thought of past Walleye expeditions and I started to get scared because what if (This is as good as it gets). At this point I expect I have a reckoning coming in some form and truly expected something to go terribly wrong but nothing.

Right about 8 am I took a good look over at little fish fanatic who had his 6 foot toon tied to my 11 ft toon yacht (as he calls it) so he can utilize my minkota trolling motor and he was snoring (chopping cord wood). Very impressive to be able to even doze off not to mention actual sleep on a 6 ft toon but he did it.

It was getting close to 10 am and I was trying to upgrade my limit of Eyes and a big heavy pull on my St.Croix and I knew I had a dandy. With visions of a 6 to 7 lb walleye dancing in my head, but was so cruelly dashed when that stinking rotten carp hit the surface. Oh well, a great morning on a lake that I have struggled with and a limit of Eyes, I am beaming from ear to ear.

Thanks to all of you who have helped me learn how to be successful and a big shout out to (tube dude), Pat I think you could take the most inept Walleye fisherman (me) and make turn him into Babe Winkleman (not me) in short order. But really you have at least you have given me a fighting chance!!!!

Sounds like an amazing trip thanks for the report.

Sounds like 'Moonlighting' at it's finest....way to go....and to drag around a youngster with you? That's even finer yet...he won't be afraid of the dark....Guluk...

Night time is the right time. Good work.

[#0000ff]Good work. Loved your report...except for the heavy dose of jealousy I got after reading it.

[#0000ff]Your experience reinforces what most Starvation fans and walleye chasers come to know and understand. First, you gotta find the fish. Second, you gotta find ACTIVE fish. And if that involves fishing after dark then that is what you gotta do.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Starvation has treated you well for a newbie. Hopefully you will have more good trips and build your knowledge of the different areas...during different seasons and water levels. Then, when you score well you can claim it was skill and knowledge. And when you don't do so well you can blame the weather, the moon or DWR...like everybody else.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Had to chuckle when I read about your son dozing off. Seems like the young guys these days just don't got the stamina for night fishing or early morning departures. This picture is of a friend's son who unclipped the seat back on his tube and laid back for an on-the-water snooze session.[/#0000ff]

Loved the picture Pat, I guess I am not the only one that has a teen that can't quite hang. This was my best fishing trip of the year, even though Jacob tells me Walleye fishing is too slow for him. I had to laugh apparently he doesn't know how good of a bite we had and just how slow the Walleye bite can get. Maybe he will gain some patience with age, time will tell.

The only thing that could have been better is if we had caught a couple bigger ones but seeing my Wife is cooking them up today I will curb my complaints. I think I am going to plan another night excursion maybe on Willard.

[#0000FF]You done good. Bigger fish are good for exercise (even walleyes)...and bragging rights. But the ones you brought home are dandy for the table.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]There are some over 10 pounds in Starvation but they don't fall for the silly little stuff most anglers show them. They eat big perch...and now probably some of the new introductions. Used to catch the bigguns on big swimbaits and they often had chubs up to ten or twelve inches in them. They are meat eaters.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]But...that being said...there are a few walleye pros who fish only at night and only with BIG lures. Think Castaic Trout plastics and magnum Rapalas. And fish them up on the flats or along break lines.

Great report, I would be going tomorrow if I wasn't on a ship going to Sitka, Alaska right now. Looking for salmon, and Cod.
I love Starvation.
Nice details and i appreciate the report. I'll be launching in bunny gulch so I am happy to read your report. Is the water high enough to make it easy and safe for one person launch?
[signature]
That's questionable and the water has dropped a lot in just 1 week.

[#0000FF]When water levels drop below safe launching elsewhere around Bunny Gulch, you can still usually launch off the end of the old Hwy 40 road.

Loved your Post
this was the part I liked best, first we all learn from each other and getting a little cocky till the next time you don't catch anything.
