Offshore Tackle, the leader in in-line planer boards, publishes a lot of how-to articles written by walleye pro's like Mark Romanack. Would it work to hook a planer board up to a downrigger line instead of using a mast?

It would only marginally work, because it would be too low to work effectively. To make a planer board work properly one must get the line to the board as high above the water as possible. That is why rods designed to be used with planer boards are typically at least 8 feet long.

The other problem with using a downrigger, and perhaps the biggest, is that the downrigger cable would sink. Planer board line is a hi-vis dacron. It dips in the water occasionally, but is out of the water most of the time.

I wouldn't even waste my time trying to use a downrigger.
